away under <strong>the</strong> barn <strong>the</strong> much prized wagon, so this was a<br />

lucky f<strong>in</strong>d for <strong>the</strong> boy.<br />

After gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r died gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r came to Hve with us,<br />

but his poultry chose to rema<strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong> old place, <strong>the</strong> hens select-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> back kitchen <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> cellar house, while a very noisy<br />

flock <strong>of</strong> gu<strong>in</strong>eas occupied <strong>the</strong> trees. These fowls came <strong>in</strong> for<br />

a large share <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> attention. What fun it was to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

gu<strong>in</strong>eas' nests, as a number <strong>of</strong> hens laid <strong>the</strong>ir eggs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

nest, so that usually when we found <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>y would be<br />

rounded up with eggs. It was <strong>in</strong>deed a victory to discover<br />

<strong>one</strong> hidden away with great skill amongst <strong>the</strong> giant trumpet<br />

weeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old neglected garden.<br />

One day while we were merrily count<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>and</strong><br />

Mary Jane was hft<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> httle bro<strong>the</strong>r Joe through <strong>the</strong> back<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old deserted kitchen, an accident occurred we<br />

can never forget. Little Joe was gnaw<strong>in</strong>g bark from a sassa-<br />

fras root at <strong>the</strong> time, when he suddenly cried out that <strong>the</strong><br />

root had pierced his eye. Fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> hired man, who<br />

were do<strong>in</strong>g chores at <strong>the</strong> barn, ran over, <strong>and</strong> upon exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

<strong>the</strong>y discovered a small puncture <strong>in</strong> his right eye. The<br />

little three-year-old was not allowed to cry or rub <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>jured<br />

eye. Mo<strong>the</strong>r from her home medic<strong>in</strong>e drawer was <strong>the</strong> doctor.<br />

She stirred up a poultice <strong>of</strong> well-pulverized slippery elm,<br />

b<strong>and</strong>aged his eyes, <strong>and</strong> darkened <strong>the</strong> front room, while fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

made haste to consult an ocuhst <strong>in</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati. The physician<br />

told fa<strong>the</strong>r that all was be<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>one</strong> that could be <strong>in</strong> such a<br />

case, so mo<strong>the</strong>r rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dark room with her child to<br />

keep him company <strong>and</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong> him, as well as to see that <strong>the</strong><br />

poultices were changed <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> light kept from his eye.<br />

This accident happened <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> little bro<strong>the</strong>r's busy season.<br />

He had been mak<strong>in</strong>g hay out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> front yard for his special<br />

calf, <strong>and</strong> was tak<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>of</strong> it as fast as it was dry enough.<br />

He had a box with a heavy tw<strong>in</strong>e str<strong>in</strong>g attached, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

this appliance he had hauled a number <strong>of</strong> loads. He ordered<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r Will <strong>and</strong> me to see that his hay was properly cared<br />

for. We delivered it <strong>in</strong> his dark room, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> little<br />

fellow would exam<strong>in</strong>e his load, stoop<strong>in</strong>g down to feel <strong>of</strong> both<br />

load <strong>and</strong> box; <strong>and</strong> I can yet remember that, bl<strong>in</strong>dfolded as
