ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

children learned <strong>the</strong> alphabet from <strong>the</strong> old Family Bible, <strong>and</strong><br />

it was <strong>the</strong>ir reader at school. Had <strong>the</strong> Book been excluded<br />

from <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> those days, sad <strong>in</strong>deed would have<br />

been <strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> majority. To <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>rs it was<br />

<strong>history</strong>, biography, poetry. They read it while <strong>the</strong>y spun at<br />

<strong>the</strong> flax-wheel, while <strong>the</strong>y rocked <strong>the</strong> cradle. It expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

that o<strong>the</strong>r Book, <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong> Nature; it made <strong>our</strong> <strong>ancestors</strong><br />

what <strong>the</strong>y were — h<strong>one</strong>st, God-fear<strong>in</strong>g people. Were I to<br />

take from <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r's life her faith <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>spiration<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Scriptures <strong>and</strong> ignore <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence it exerted upon<br />

her whole way, I should be no true historian. She read it <strong>in</strong><br />

childhood as a school-book; <strong>in</strong> later <strong>years</strong> it was to her a treasury<br />

<strong>of</strong> all knowledge. How she delighted to trace through its<br />

prophetic books <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g Christ! The approach<strong>in</strong>g footsteps<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>e thrilled her <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir onward march<br />

through <strong>the</strong> Old Testament. All <strong>the</strong> great events recorded<br />

<strong>in</strong> her Book became so familiar that she used to spend <strong>the</strong><br />

long even<strong>in</strong>gs when fa<strong>the</strong>r was away from home tell<strong>in</strong>g us <strong>of</strong><br />

Daniel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lions' den, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrew children, <strong>of</strong> David <strong>and</strong><br />

Goliath, <strong>and</strong> many ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> those immortal stories.<br />

Our mo<strong>the</strong>r developed <strong>in</strong>to an active, obedient child, fond<br />

<strong>of</strong> play <strong>and</strong> ever eager to know. I like to fancy my Gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Keeler — tall, large <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e-look<strong>in</strong>g as she was —<br />

when her busy day was over, sitt<strong>in</strong>g down with <strong>the</strong> large<br />

Family Bible open <strong>in</strong> her lap <strong>and</strong> her knitt<strong>in</strong>g-needles <strong>in</strong> her<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s. Plump William <strong>and</strong> little dark-eyed Sophronia <strong>and</strong><br />

at mo<strong>the</strong>r's knee. First <strong>the</strong>y learned <strong>the</strong> large capital letters<br />

at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapters, po<strong>in</strong>ted out to <strong>the</strong>m by a<br />

knitt<strong>in</strong>g needle; next came <strong>the</strong> small letters, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n simple<br />

words <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>and</strong> two syllables, till <strong>the</strong>y could read <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong>f at<br />

sight. Indeed those mo<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>s knew various arts, <strong>and</strong><br />

withal were not poor governesses, start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir children well<br />

on <strong>the</strong> road to knowledge. The Bible be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> only textbook<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r's youth, coupled with her great love for<br />

it, made her <strong>the</strong> best <strong>in</strong>formed person I have yet met <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />

great facts <strong>of</strong> that greatest Book. As I write, my eye is ever<br />
