THE GREEN TREE TAVERN 175<br />

at <strong>in</strong>tervals. On <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> his visits he found a Bro<strong>the</strong>r Isaac<br />

Morris (we always knew each o<strong>the</strong>r as "bro<strong>the</strong>r" <strong>and</strong> "sister"<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church fellowship <strong>of</strong> those days), who was a member <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> church at Clio. He lived fifteen miles away, but was at<br />

church on preach<strong>in</strong>g days <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vited fa<strong>the</strong>r home with him.<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r Morris kept <strong>the</strong> Green Tree House at <strong>the</strong> crossroads<br />

just <strong>in</strong> tlie edge <strong>of</strong> a settlement <strong>of</strong> Shakers; <strong>in</strong> fact, <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong><br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed his on <strong>the</strong> south. The Green Tree was on <strong>the</strong> direct<br />

road to <strong>our</strong> place, someth<strong>in</strong>g over a half day's drive, so fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was glad to avail himself <strong>of</strong> this <strong>in</strong>vitation <strong>and</strong> to extend his<br />

acqua<strong>in</strong>tance among <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church. I cannot re-<br />

call just how it all came about, but anyway Mr. Morris <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir neighborhood school to William, <strong>and</strong> as soon as arrangements<br />

could be made he was to beg<strong>in</strong>. When fa<strong>the</strong>r went to<br />

his next appo<strong>in</strong>tment at Clio he took William over; <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

went along that time, <strong>and</strong> it was thus <strong>our</strong> eldest, with his well-<br />

filled trunk, set out to beg<strong>in</strong> his life work as teacher.<br />

When <strong>our</strong> parents returned it was to tell us how pleased<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were with William's location. They described <strong>the</strong> old-<br />

fashi<strong>one</strong>d brick house, a large square build<strong>in</strong>g with a wide hall<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> center, with two rooms on ei<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> it.<br />

This old tavern, <strong>the</strong>y told us, was two stories high, with oaken<br />

floors. Ah, I can yet hear <strong>the</strong> clatter <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> echo <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

boys' heavy boots resound<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> uncarpeted floor <strong>of</strong> that<br />

wide hall! More than <strong>fifty</strong> <strong>years</strong> have passed, bleach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

hair once so abundant <strong>and</strong> dark <strong>and</strong> dull<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ears no longer<br />

young, but still <strong>the</strong> echoes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past r<strong>in</strong>g out more clearly<br />

than any sound <strong>of</strong> to-day.<br />

On learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g features <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Green<br />

Tree, we three younger children were told that we might go to<br />

see William <strong>in</strong> his new abode, <strong>and</strong> as I now recall, I th<strong>in</strong>k we<br />

were to take up some th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r had f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>of</strong>f^ for<br />

him. It was <strong>the</strong> first time we children had ever g<strong>one</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at a distance without some <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> elders. I am look<strong>in</strong>g back<br />

<strong>and</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g how we made plans for this visit <strong>and</strong> dreamed<br />

day <strong>and</strong> night <strong>of</strong> it. The day before we started fa<strong>the</strong>r made a<br />

map <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> j<strong>our</strong>ney, giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> directions <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> c<strong>our</strong>se <strong>and</strong><br />

tell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>one</strong> diverg<strong>in</strong>g road where we would f<strong>in</strong>d a guide-
