292 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

to Stearns County. This was just what Mr. Fox wanted to<br />

do, for he was fond <strong>of</strong> hunt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>and</strong> as small game<br />

<strong>and</strong> fish were plentiful <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ma<strong>in</strong>e Prairie country it was just<br />

<strong>the</strong> place he would enjoy, <strong>and</strong> so <strong>the</strong>y started north for fa<strong>the</strong>r's.<br />

On <strong>the</strong>ir way from Hoka <strong>the</strong>y stopped at Morristown, where<br />

Mr. Frost <strong>and</strong> I were <strong>the</strong>n hv<strong>in</strong>g. Mr. Fox did not look like<br />

an <strong>in</strong>valid; he was a f<strong>in</strong>e specimen <strong>of</strong> well-developed manhood,<br />

just tall enough <strong>and</strong> well-proporti<strong>one</strong>d. He had dark hair<br />

<strong>and</strong> large, expressive gray eyes, with a clear complexion —<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed he was a superior look<strong>in</strong>g young man, cultured <strong>and</strong><br />

ref<strong>in</strong>ed. His family were Quakers (Hicksite). In those days<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was a large settlement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se people about Cadiz.<br />

It was summertime when <strong>the</strong>y took <strong>the</strong>ir trip to Ma<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Prairie, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir j<strong>our</strong>ney was a long, hard <strong>one</strong> through dust<br />

<strong>and</strong> heat; <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y came <strong>in</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> Pearl Lake Place<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k it must have looked refresh<strong>in</strong>g. Look<strong>in</strong>g across <strong>the</strong><br />

s<strong>and</strong>bar <strong>the</strong>y could see <strong>the</strong> entire shimmer<strong>in</strong>g surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lake, with its dark <strong>and</strong> shady border <strong>of</strong> native forest. It has<br />

ever been regarded as <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most charm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> lakes, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> newcomer could not but admire its ever chang<strong>in</strong>g beauty;<br />

Mr. Fox felt that here he had found <strong>the</strong> place to get well. Our<br />

people were pleased with this addition to <strong>the</strong> household, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>y, too, enc<strong>our</strong>aged him with praise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> health-giv<strong>in</strong>g air<br />

<strong>of</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn M<strong>in</strong>nesota. Soon <strong>the</strong> young man became a part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family, <strong>and</strong> he <strong>and</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joe were friends. They<br />

would go out on <strong>the</strong> lake toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> anchor <strong>the</strong>ir boat <strong>in</strong> a<br />

particular spot we had named "Pike County," from <strong>the</strong><br />

school <strong>of</strong> pike which congregated <strong>the</strong>re. What sport it was<br />

to fish <strong>in</strong> that place! It was simply fun to throw out a hook<br />

<strong>and</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> such splendid results; <strong>in</strong> less than an h<strong>our</strong> we<br />

would have all <strong>the</strong> fish we could use for several days.<br />

While Mr. Fox did not look <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>valid he was weak.<br />

When he first came he could not walk after game, but he was<br />

gifted with <strong>the</strong> true sportsman's patience. He would go down<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> woods with his gun <strong>and</strong> take a seat on a stump <strong>in</strong> some<br />

retired nook <strong>and</strong> wait for rabbits, squirrels, pheasants or<br />

prairie chickens to chance his way. He <strong>of</strong>ten brought home<br />

trophies from this sedentary method <strong>of</strong> hunt<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> always
