CHAPTER VI<br />

THE OLD FARM<br />

HAT a wealth <strong>of</strong> associations clusters about<br />

<strong>the</strong> old farm which James Watk<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>-<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, cleared from <strong>the</strong> primitive forest!<br />

Where shall I beg<strong>in</strong> to write <strong>of</strong> those acres<br />

bought from <strong>one</strong> F<strong>in</strong>ney, who obta<strong>in</strong>ed his<br />

patent from government <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

J nmeteenth century <strong>and</strong> transferred his right<br />

to <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r not far from <strong>the</strong> year 1804? From him it<br />

south. I remember all <strong>the</strong>se l<strong>in</strong>es, with <strong>the</strong> thick rails staked<br />

with heavy riders to keep out breachy cattle; <strong>the</strong>se were <strong>the</strong><br />

boundaries to <strong>our</strong> little world <strong>of</strong> home. To scale <strong>the</strong> high<br />

fences was to make a l<strong>of</strong>ty <strong>and</strong> dar<strong>in</strong>g venture out <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

great world ; places <strong>of</strong> defense were <strong>the</strong>y, too, when be<strong>in</strong>g chased<br />

by dogs or fierce domestic animals, such as Jennie, <strong>our</strong> cross<br />

horse.<br />

Here on <strong>the</strong> old farm we f<strong>our</strong> children were born, as <strong>our</strong><br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r had been before us. Bro<strong>the</strong>r William, <strong>the</strong> eldest, <strong>in</strong><br />

early childhood gave promise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual man he became<br />
