HOME BUILDING IN MINNESOTA<br />

I HOSE were busy days before my wedd<strong>in</strong>g, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> time at home was short. Mo<strong>the</strong>r had made<br />

me twenty-five yards <strong>of</strong> rag carpet, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with new quilts, <strong>and</strong> my clo<strong>the</strong>s were ready<br />

before we returned to <strong>the</strong> farm. Fa<strong>the</strong>r gave<br />

us a <strong>hundred</strong> dollars for a start, <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong><br />

I went to <strong>the</strong> city to buy my housekeep<strong>in</strong>g out-<br />

fit. I remember <strong>the</strong> bright spr<strong>in</strong>g morn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> clear, cool<br />

air, <strong>the</strong> unusual sights <strong>and</strong> sounds. The boom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> cannon<br />

from <strong>the</strong> garrison at Newport could be dist<strong>in</strong>ctly heard as it<br />

arose from <strong>the</strong> valley to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty hills waU<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati,<br />

announc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> disturbance <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> country throughout its<br />

vast stretches. It was but a short time after that, April 15,<br />

1861, when President L<strong>in</strong>coln made <strong>the</strong> call for seventy-five<br />

thous<strong>and</strong> volunteers <strong>and</strong> that April day more than <strong>fifty</strong> <strong>years</strong><br />

ago I expect to remember through my rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>years</strong>. I<br />

saw <strong>the</strong> very spirit <strong>of</strong> war <strong>the</strong> day we went <strong>in</strong> to buy my wedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dishes. Ten thous<strong>and</strong> soldiers were parad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> drill<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrow streets, mak<strong>in</strong>g travel almost impossible.<br />

I saw <strong>the</strong> Highl<strong>and</strong>ers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bonnets <strong>and</strong> plaids, with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir short stock<strong>in</strong>gs show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tartan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

clan. They were <strong>in</strong> full uniform, which disclosed <strong>the</strong>ir bare<br />

knees <strong>in</strong> contrast with <strong>the</strong>ir plaid stock<strong>in</strong>gs. How <strong>the</strong>ir bagpipes<br />

echoed down <strong>the</strong> streets! The Guthrie Grays <strong>and</strong><br />
