CHILDHOOD OF B. U. WATKINS 27<br />

more difficult <strong>of</strong> removal than that <strong>of</strong> Uncle Joseph, for she<br />

lost almost her entire sight, <strong>and</strong> could just discern lif;ht when<br />

<strong>in</strong> daytime a door or w<strong>in</strong>dow was open. She walked <strong>in</strong> twi-<br />

light <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> her days.<br />

I have said but little <strong>of</strong> Robert Utter, perhaps for <strong>the</strong> very<br />

reason that he was quiet <strong>in</strong> his ways <strong>and</strong> good without mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a stir. He was dest<strong>in</strong>ed to be a farmer <strong>and</strong> a good man, as he<br />

was a boy. Our bro<strong>the</strong>r William wrote, on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> his<br />

son William Utter 's golden wedd<strong>in</strong>g, that <strong>in</strong> early manhood<br />

he became disgusted with pi<strong>one</strong>er Ufe <strong>and</strong> started to return to<br />

New Jersey. At Chillico<strong>the</strong>, however, he jomed General Duncan<br />

McArthur's army, <strong>and</strong> after varied e.xpenences <strong>in</strong> Indian<br />

warfare was paroled <strong>and</strong> returned to C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati. In 18 14 he<br />

married Sarah Van W<strong>in</strong>kle, also <strong>of</strong> Dutch extraction, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

went to housekeep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a log cab<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> which is still<br />

marked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>g Grove. Here his son, William<br />

Van W<strong>in</strong>kle Utter, was born on January 3, 181 5.<br />

While yet a child, <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r had his share <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> home place. "Go<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> cows" was <strong>one</strong>. He had to<br />

start about <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon to ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> w<strong>and</strong>erers<br />

by milk<strong>in</strong>g time, as it grew dark so early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wood<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y foraged for pasture. O<strong>the</strong>r chores <strong>of</strong> his were pull-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g flax <strong>and</strong> milk<strong>in</strong>g. One day as he was water<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> horses<br />

at <strong>the</strong> big spr<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> woods, he looked across <strong>the</strong> rav<strong>in</strong>e<br />

to <strong>the</strong> opposite bank, where, <strong>in</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>e grove, he thought he saw<br />

a company ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g as for a camp-meet<strong>in</strong>g. Cross<strong>in</strong>g over,<br />

<strong>the</strong> vision vanished; <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong>se halluc<strong>in</strong>ations became frequent<br />

it was found that he, too, <strong>the</strong> youngest, was go<strong>in</strong>g bl<strong>in</strong>d;<br />

<strong>and</strong> so it was that at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> six <strong>years</strong> he lost his sight from<br />

cataract. This was some <strong>years</strong> after Uncle Joseph 's operation,<br />

<strong>and</strong> we do not know all <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> that gloomy<br />

time, except<strong>in</strong>g that for f<strong>our</strong> <strong>years</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> best time to acquire<br />

<strong>the</strong> fundamentals <strong>of</strong> an education <strong>our</strong> dear fa<strong>the</strong>r was led by<br />

<strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>. His hungry young m<strong>in</strong>d exp<strong>and</strong>ed even <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

darkness, but <strong>the</strong>y were sad <strong>years</strong> for childhood. When an<br />

operation could be performed upon his eyes, he entirely lost<br />

<strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong> from <strong>in</strong>flammation, <strong>and</strong> had but <strong>one</strong> f<strong>our</strong>th<br />

normal vision <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. Thus h<strong>and</strong>icapped, <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r
