SCHOOL AND COLLEGE DAYS 167<br />

end<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a life whose morn<strong>in</strong>g had portended naught but<br />

brightness.<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> I went about for <strong>the</strong> last time over<br />

College Hill, just before we passed on <strong>our</strong> way. We discovered<br />

that <strong>the</strong> old academy had been taken down; <strong>the</strong> lovely shade<br />

trees <strong>of</strong> long ago had vanished; a church, no longer new, occupied<br />

<strong>the</strong> old site. The l<strong>and</strong>scape from this vantage ground<br />

had always filled us with delight; so I found a good po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

observation, <strong>and</strong> while many old scenes were blotted out*, I<br />

found that new cities had come to view. Look<strong>in</strong>g south<br />

<strong>the</strong>re arose a l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> encircl<strong>in</strong>g hills as a wall. In <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>our</strong> youth we thought <strong>the</strong>se hills a barrier which would hedge<br />

forever <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati; but to my astonishment I saw<br />

that it had boiled over, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> north side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill <strong>the</strong>re<br />

stood out <strong>in</strong> bold relief a fair <strong>and</strong> beautiful city. It showed<br />

well laid out streets, large factories, schools <strong>and</strong> churches, beside<br />

great blocks <strong>of</strong> red brick buildmgs. Here too we saw <strong>the</strong><br />

large cemetery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Bernard Catholic Church. The<br />

decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sun sh<strong>one</strong> upon its <strong>hundred</strong>s <strong>of</strong> white marble slabs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> I could but recall <strong>the</strong> <strong>years</strong> when it was a much smaller<br />

ground. I thought, too, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> destructive war which had<br />

added so greatly to <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> churchyard rest<strong>in</strong>g-places.<br />

The hilly places, once thought to have no value, were covered<br />

with <strong>the</strong> ever-toil<strong>in</strong>g commerce <strong>of</strong> nations; thous<strong>and</strong>s from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Old World had, through long <strong>years</strong> <strong>of</strong> exhaust<strong>in</strong>g labor,<br />

built this new city <strong>and</strong> peopled it with <strong>in</strong>dustrious <strong>and</strong> prosper-<br />

ous <strong>in</strong>habitants. As <strong>in</strong> many ano<strong>the</strong>r place <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> young l<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> toilers had laid <strong>the</strong> foundations for oncom<strong>in</strong>g generations,<br />

to make life easier for <strong>the</strong>ir children than <strong>the</strong>irs had been <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir early days.<br />

As we were tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> last walk through <strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong><br />

Farmers' College Joe walked up to a citizen <strong>and</strong> asked him a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> questions, <strong>and</strong> was much <strong>in</strong>terested to f<strong>in</strong>d he was<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g with his old college chum, Ed Wild. Thus <strong>the</strong>y met<br />

after <strong>the</strong> laspe <strong>of</strong> a long lifetime, <strong>and</strong> but to part, never to<br />

meet here aga<strong>in</strong>. We found <strong>the</strong> military school occupy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> old college build<strong>in</strong>g. Cannon were planted on <strong>the</strong><br />

campus; <strong>the</strong> grass had been covered with gravel for a parade
