OUR SPRINGTIME loi<br />

sister <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ash-barrel, where I was secreted,<br />

<strong>and</strong>, as she told me but yesterday, was "cuddled <strong>and</strong> comforted"<br />

to her heart's content <strong>in</strong> my arms. That was <strong>the</strong><br />

first <strong>and</strong> last punishment for <strong>the</strong> baby; we older <strong>one</strong>s kept no<br />

record <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>s for obvious reasons — <strong>the</strong>y would have loaded<br />

<strong>our</strong> memories somewhat! One punishment for which Bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Will fortified himself with <strong>our</strong> help I have not forgotten. As<br />

usual on such occasions, he was rem<strong>and</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> upstairs<br />

porch, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stairs it was noticeable that he<br />

was seized with a strange <strong>in</strong>ability to ascend. In order to<br />

expla<strong>in</strong> his difficulty I must ask <strong>the</strong> privilege <strong>of</strong> digress<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r William was a bright <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligent child with a<br />

great deal <strong>of</strong> spirit, <strong>and</strong> he easily devised ways <strong>of</strong> teas<strong>in</strong>g us<br />

younger <strong>one</strong>s, who were more sensitive <strong>and</strong> usually unable to<br />

reply to his sallies <strong>of</strong> wit. We all loved <strong>and</strong> admired <strong>our</strong><br />

elder bro<strong>the</strong>r, but he was more boisterous than we <strong>and</strong> led us<br />

<strong>in</strong>to many an hilarious game we would not <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>selves have<br />

<strong>in</strong>vented. Often from <strong>the</strong> shade <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> walnut tree on a hot<br />

afternoon <strong>of</strong> summer would come <strong>the</strong> warwhoop <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> contend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

parties as with wooden swords or daggers we fought<br />

<strong>our</strong> mimic battles.<br />

When <strong>our</strong> cries reached mo<strong>the</strong>r's ears she would arrest<br />

her riot<strong>in</strong>g children, <strong>and</strong> was sometimes obliged to mete<br />

out summary punishment to <strong>the</strong> leaders. One Sunday afternoon<br />

it happened that she was thus disturbed <strong>in</strong> her read<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

wild shouts <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> scuffl<strong>in</strong>g rent <strong>the</strong> peaceful air.<br />

We were dispersed, but <strong>the</strong> punishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>of</strong>fender.<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r Will, was postp<strong>one</strong>d until Monday, such a scene not<br />

befitt<strong>in</strong>g Sunday. On Monday mo<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>in</strong> an upper room<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g out on that side porch <strong>of</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>y. In this room <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>our</strong>t was to be held that day; <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> culprit was to meet<br />

her at an appo<strong>in</strong>ted h<strong>our</strong>, when his case would be <strong>in</strong>vestigated<br />

<strong>and</strong> proper punishment adm<strong>in</strong>istered. Fa<strong>the</strong>r was not at<br />

home, but <strong>in</strong> any event it usually fell to <strong>our</strong> dispassionate<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r to punish us children. Will prepared himself for trial<br />

<strong>in</strong> an unbecom<strong>in</strong>gly hilarious mood. The rest <strong>of</strong> us were taken<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> secret <strong>and</strong> went with him to <strong>the</strong> woodpile, where<br />

he got some hickory spl<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> we helped him to prepare an
