OUR SPRINGTIME 121<br />

Children <strong>and</strong> children's children come<br />

From near <strong>and</strong> far away,<br />

To crown with golden memories<br />

The golden wedd<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

Old Fa<strong>the</strong>r Time <strong>the</strong> bridegroom's hair<br />

With frost has spr<strong>in</strong>kled well;<br />

If on her head some flakes were shed<br />

They melted as <strong>the</strong>y fell.<br />

But heads may bear <strong>the</strong> touch <strong>of</strong> Time<br />

'Ga<strong>in</strong>st which <strong>the</strong> heart is pro<strong>of</strong>,<br />

As fires burn brightest on <strong>the</strong> hearth<br />

When snow lies on <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>.<br />

The common lot <strong>of</strong> life is that<br />

Which greatest bless<strong>in</strong>g yields;<br />

With joy <strong>and</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> God blessed <strong>the</strong>ir lives,<br />

With sun <strong>and</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fields.<br />

They sowed good seed <strong>in</strong> life's fair spr<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

They toiled for you <strong>and</strong> me;<br />

Honor <strong>and</strong> love <strong>and</strong> gratitude.<br />

These shall <strong>the</strong>ir harvest be.<br />

The gray-haired children come.<br />

May health <strong>and</strong> cheer attend <strong>the</strong>m here,<br />

May bless<strong>in</strong>gs never cease,<br />

Their ways be ways <strong>of</strong> pleasantness<br />

And all <strong>the</strong>ir paths be peace.<br />

Sometimes I can but stop <strong>and</strong> say, "The dear old days!"<br />

So much <strong>of</strong> simplicity, <strong>of</strong> household love, <strong>of</strong> freedom from<br />

<strong>the</strong> bonds <strong>of</strong> what we now call "society"! How sweet were<br />

<strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> childhood <strong>in</strong> that unpretentious home <strong>our</strong><br />

parents made for us! Our old gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r still tarried by <strong>our</strong><br />

fireside, but his days were numbered <strong>and</strong> I have a clear remembrance<br />

<strong>of</strong> his pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> life's spr<strong>in</strong>gtime. Early<br />

<strong>one</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ohio, before <strong>the</strong> holidays, fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was gett<strong>in</strong>g ready for an evangelistic t<strong>our</strong> which would <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

some two weeks. While mak<strong>in</strong>g preparations to leave<br />

us he became filled with <strong>the</strong> most gloomy forebod<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong>
