WHAT THE YEARS HAVE BROUGHT 325<br />

period <strong>of</strong> youth, <strong>and</strong> it was but a beautiful consummation<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y were married <strong>in</strong> St. Cloud.<br />

Estella <strong>and</strong> Harry have never been selfish <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home<br />

life, but have shared it with more than <strong>one</strong> who has had need<br />

<strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>and</strong> lives could pive. There are young<br />

people who th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> that California home as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong><br />

parents, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> Estella is a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

She has ever been <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> educational matters. She<br />

taught both before <strong>and</strong> after she was married, <strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> love<br />

<strong>of</strong> it. She is a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Cloud Normal School, <strong>and</strong><br />

is still deeply <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> educational matters. In Riverside<br />

Estella is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school board, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> last election<br />

received more votes than any o<strong>the</strong>r c<strong>and</strong>idate voted for that<br />

election. Julia has <strong>the</strong> womanly home-keep<strong>in</strong>g abilities, <strong>and</strong><br />

is <strong>the</strong> comfort <strong>of</strong> her parents <strong>in</strong> an unusual degree — loyal<br />

<strong>and</strong> true she lives her life, reward<strong>in</strong>g all that has ever been<br />

d<strong>one</strong> for her <strong>in</strong> a life <strong>of</strong> devotion. I take comfort <strong>in</strong> my<br />

namesake.<br />

As I have been writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se annals I have <strong>of</strong>ten paused to<br />

regret that so much <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> family <strong>history</strong> has been lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

flight <strong>of</strong> a <strong>hundred</strong> <strong>years</strong>. Almost everyth<strong>in</strong>g au<strong>the</strong>ntic has<br />

been h<strong>and</strong>ed down by <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r, who had a retentive historic<br />

memory as well as a f<strong>in</strong>e verbal <strong>one</strong>. He reta<strong>in</strong>ed his faculties<br />

<strong>in</strong> a remarkable manner until his death, <strong>in</strong> his eighty-second<br />

year.<br />

When Datus <strong>and</strong> Ida removed from Pearl Lake Place to<br />

Indianapolis he came to <strong>our</strong> home, which was <strong>the</strong>n <strong>in</strong> Meigs<br />

County, Ohio. He spent a summer with us, <strong>and</strong> we could see<br />

that he was long<strong>in</strong>g to be back at Pearl Lake, or aga<strong>in</strong> fancy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati would help him to be more contented. He<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally decided to go to <strong>the</strong> nearer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> home places, <strong>and</strong> so<br />

he paid a visit to C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati. There his old friend, James<br />

Challen, <strong>in</strong>troduced him to Mrs. Zel<strong>in</strong>da Wood, a homeopathic<br />

physician. She was a woman who <strong>in</strong> early life, through much<br />

energy <strong>and</strong> exertion, had obta<strong>in</strong>ed a good education; she had<br />

studied French <strong>and</strong> prepared herself to be a teacher, as well<br />

as tak<strong>in</strong>g her medical degree. She went as a missionary<br />

teacher <strong>and</strong> physician to <strong>the</strong> French prov<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Canada
