20 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>rs knitted as <strong>the</strong>y rode to market or to <strong>and</strong> from<br />

<strong>the</strong> neighbors' houses; it is even told <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrious woman<br />

that she carried her knitt<strong>in</strong>g to her fa<strong>the</strong>r's funeral <strong>in</strong> order not<br />

to be idle on <strong>the</strong> way.<br />

Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's blacksmith forge was set up near <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> until late <strong>in</strong> life he had plenty to do, divid<strong>in</strong>g his time between<br />

clear<strong>in</strong>g his l<strong>and</strong> or farm<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>and</strong> ply<strong>in</strong>g his trade.<br />

They did not live always <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first little cab<strong>in</strong>, but soon built<br />

a hewn log house <strong>of</strong> larger proportions; nor did <strong>the</strong>ir family<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> so small. In <strong>the</strong>ir first little home on <strong>the</strong> farm was<br />

born <strong>the</strong>ir elder son, Joseph, on Saturday, October 26, 1805.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> larger hewn log house <strong>the</strong>ir third child, Benjam<strong>in</strong> Utter,<br />

was born on September 14, 181 1.<br />

The <strong>years</strong> passed until gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r's eldest-born, William<br />

Utter, who had been left beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> New Jersey, should have<br />

atta<strong>in</strong>ed his majority. She began to watch for his arrival, <strong>and</strong><br />

through <strong>the</strong> wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>years</strong> it became a habit <strong>of</strong> hers to st<strong>and</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> porch <strong>and</strong> look down <strong>the</strong> W<strong>in</strong>ton Road to see if her boy<br />

were com<strong>in</strong>g. When she saw a young man well mounted<br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g, she thought, "It is William;" but each passed on.<br />

One day she heard that a new family had come from "Jersey"<br />

<strong>and</strong> had settled three miles north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, so <strong>the</strong>y went over<br />

for news from <strong>the</strong>ir "far country." With what pa<strong>in</strong>ful eager-<br />

ness <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r must have awaited <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> her son's<br />

delay! There was still no mail service over <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

<strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r could only hope for some word <strong>of</strong> mouth<br />

brought by emigrants from New Jersey.<br />

It was but sad news that greeted her, for <strong>the</strong> new-comers<br />

told her that WiUiam had died at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty — only<br />

<strong>one</strong> year before he was to have come to her. She not only<br />

missed see<strong>in</strong>g him grow <strong>in</strong>to young manhood, but it was not<br />

even hers to know those details <strong>of</strong> his development which<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>rs so treasure; for her it was to be as though death had<br />

claimed him when <strong>the</strong>y had first parted <strong>in</strong> New Jersey long<br />

before. Never aga<strong>in</strong> did she watch for <strong>the</strong> well-mounted<br />

young man rid<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> W<strong>in</strong>ton Road, nor on see<strong>in</strong>g such<br />

a horseman did she call <strong>the</strong> little bro<strong>the</strong>rs from <strong>the</strong>ir play to<br />

watch <strong>the</strong> approach <strong>of</strong> William.
