200 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

leaves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> maples down, she too found her rest. So even <strong>in</strong><br />

my youth <strong>the</strong> friends I so loved <strong>and</strong> admired were called away<br />

early. Of Alice I have no story to tell — she just passed on,<br />

I know not where nor how.<br />

These deaths cast a sad shadow on <strong>the</strong> Hunt family. They<br />

prayed <strong>and</strong> read <strong>the</strong> Bible, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally came to take up <strong>the</strong><br />

burdens <strong>of</strong> life, trust<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> promises <strong>of</strong> Jesus. Sometime<br />

<strong>in</strong> March Cal Hunt was married. The wedd<strong>in</strong>g was meant to<br />

be a quiet affair, but as Silas Tilten, <strong>the</strong> bridegroom, had been<br />

a boy among <strong>the</strong> boys <strong>and</strong> was not yet twenty-<strong>one</strong>, <strong>the</strong> youth<br />

<strong>of</strong> Red Lion thought it would not do to let this wedd<strong>in</strong>g pass<br />

without a charivari; so before <strong>the</strong> wedd<strong>in</strong>g supper was served<br />

we heard horns blow<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> could see by <strong>the</strong> moonlight that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were a lot <strong>of</strong> mounted men <strong>and</strong> boys on foot with t<strong>in</strong> pans<br />

<strong>and</strong> drums <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r unmusical <strong>in</strong>struments. Oh, how it did<br />

hurt Uncle Spencer to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> young men had no more respect<br />

for his family than to be guilty <strong>of</strong> such an unk<strong>in</strong>d act!<br />

The Hunts were told that I would hke to help <strong>the</strong>m with<br />

<strong>the</strong> fall sew<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong>y seemed pleased to have me I at<br />

once began to assist <strong>the</strong>m with this large work. They were<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g men's clo<strong>the</strong>s — coats, vests <strong>and</strong> trousers. Abbie<br />

Jenk<strong>in</strong>s did <strong>the</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> bast<strong>in</strong>g, while I would sew <strong>and</strong><br />

Aunt 'Rusha would press <strong>the</strong>m: thus we made bus<strong>in</strong>ess move.<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k now as I look back on that period <strong>of</strong> my life that this<br />

experience gave me <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best educations I ever received.<br />

I felt responsibihty <strong>and</strong> a desire to be helpful, <strong>and</strong> I had,<br />

above all, Abbie Jenk<strong>in</strong>s as a teacher. She was a choice<br />

spirit; I never saw her o<strong>the</strong>r than good-natured <strong>and</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Indeed, <strong>the</strong> whole family was noble, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> women were<br />

rehgious. The men were not Methodists; <strong>the</strong>y could not<br />

read <strong>the</strong> Bible that way.<br />

There seems a place here to write <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lovely <strong>and</strong><br />

unusual, hfe <strong>of</strong> Miss Abbie Jenk<strong>in</strong>s. When I knew her <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Hunts she was thirty-two that autumn, <strong>and</strong> yesterday<br />

(November 8, 1912,) I heard that she had died, hav<strong>in</strong>g had<br />

to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> her long hfe <strong>of</strong> eighty-five <strong>years</strong> <strong>the</strong> full<br />

possession <strong>of</strong> her extraord<strong>in</strong>ary powers <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> heart.<br />

The sketch <strong>of</strong> her life which is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Frankl<strong>in</strong> (Ohio) Chronicle
