OUR SPRINGTIME 119<br />

were bride <strong>and</strong> bridegroom. Her daughter Margaret read it<br />

to us, <strong>and</strong> because <strong>of</strong> its many references to <strong>the</strong> past, as well<br />

as its happy expression, I will msert it here:<br />

'Twas <strong>fifty</strong> <strong>years</strong> ago to-day,<br />

In golden harvest wea<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

When groom <strong>and</strong> bride stood side by side<br />

And jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>and</strong>s toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

With hopes <strong>and</strong> fears, with smiles <strong>and</strong> tears,<br />

The solemn words were said,<br />

And forth from out her fa<strong>the</strong>r's house<br />

The wilhng bride was led.<br />

And did she wear a gown <strong>of</strong> silk,<br />

And veil <strong>and</strong> wreath so sweet?<br />

Did white-robed children scatter flowers<br />

Before her slippered feet.''<br />

Had she a monstrous trunk, well filled<br />

With ribbon, lace <strong>and</strong> all.''<br />

And did she go <strong>in</strong> Pullman car<br />

To see Niagara fail?<br />

Ah, well you know I was not <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

And if I guess amiss<br />

The bride will k<strong>in</strong>dly set me right;<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k 'twas more like this<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k her sisters all, that morn.<br />

Were up <strong>and</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g early.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> cocks were crow<strong>in</strong>g yet.<br />

And while <strong>the</strong> dews were pearly.<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fireplace<br />

The hickory logs were burn<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

And chickens <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fry<strong>in</strong>g pan<br />

A golden brown were turn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

And ears <strong>of</strong> sweet young corn, perhaps,<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> coals were toast<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

And under ashes hot, maybe.<br />

Potatoes might be roast<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

For <strong>fifty</strong> <strong>years</strong> ago, you know.<br />

In houses built <strong>of</strong> logs,<br />

They had not learned to make ice cream,<br />

And fry <strong>the</strong> legs <strong>of</strong> frogs.
