JOSEPH RAY WATKINS 299<br />
didn't learn what I do know all at once. It was a growth. The<br />
idea was properly conceived, it germ<strong>in</strong>ated, it hore fruit. I knew<br />
I had a good th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Watk<strong>in</strong>s' L<strong>in</strong>iment. At first I tried to sell<br />
it to <strong>the</strong> trade. 1 soon learned that a man's competitors are not <strong>the</strong><br />
people to market his goods for him. Whenever possible, <strong>the</strong> drug-<br />
gists substituted <strong>the</strong>ir own remedies where m<strong>in</strong>e were called for.<br />
They knocked me all <strong>the</strong>y could. Instead <strong>of</strong> prosper<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />
grow<strong>in</strong>g prosperity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, I got poorer <strong>and</strong> poorer. Then it<br />
was I awoke to <strong>the</strong> fact that I could afford to take my goods to <strong>the</strong><br />
consumer. I decided that I would no longer trust my competitors<br />
to push my goods for me. I realized that <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> people are<br />
h<strong>one</strong>st; that most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m will pay <strong>the</strong>ir bills. I hired agents for<br />
wages to carry <strong>the</strong> goods to <strong>the</strong> consumer. That system, although<br />
an improvement on sell<strong>in</strong>g through competitors, was not entirely<br />
satisfactory work. The present plan was gradually evolved, <strong>and</strong> we<br />
have stuck to it ever s<strong>in</strong>ce, <strong>and</strong> have built up much <strong>the</strong> largest bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
If <strong>the</strong>re are those vvho imag<strong>in</strong>e I am <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess solely for <strong>the</strong><br />
m<strong>one</strong>y <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>in</strong> it, <strong>the</strong>y are sadly mistaken. This bus<strong>in</strong>ess is, <strong>and</strong><br />
always has been, my pride <strong>and</strong> my joy. Beside it all o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terests<br />
pale <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>significance. I am at my desk every day, open<strong>in</strong>g mail,<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g over orders <strong>and</strong> reports; <strong>and</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g does me more good than<br />
to keep <strong>in</strong> touch with all departments by frequent visits to every part<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> immense plant.<br />
I have been a salesman myself, <strong>and</strong> I know what salemen have to<br />
contend with. I <strong>the</strong>refore feel that my long experience <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> everyday life qualifies me to give advice <strong>and</strong> suggestions, to<br />
sympathize v^'ith you <strong>in</strong> y<strong>our</strong> troubles, to participate <strong>in</strong> y<strong>our</strong> successes,<br />
<strong>and</strong> to share <strong>in</strong> y<strong>our</strong> triumphs.<br />
The returns for Record-Bust<strong>in</strong>g Week have been a s<strong>our</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
greatest gratification <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> liveliest satisfaction to me. I particularly<br />
appreciate <strong>and</strong> heartily commend <strong>the</strong> earnest united effort on<br />
<strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> so many <strong>hundred</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> salesmen to show what could be<br />
d<strong>one</strong> <strong>in</strong> six full days' work on <strong>the</strong> road. I am sure <strong>the</strong> results are<br />
just as gratify<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> men who have d<strong>one</strong> this excellent work as<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are to me. This week marks a new era <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />
<strong>and</strong> I trust <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> facts may be <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong><br />
attract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> attention <strong>of</strong> <strong>hundred</strong>s <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r first-class men, who<br />
may <strong>in</strong> time be converted to <strong>the</strong> Watk<strong>in</strong>s Way.<br />
With <strong>the</strong> assurances <strong>of</strong> my k<strong>in</strong>dest personal regard <strong>and</strong> highest<br />
appreciation <strong>of</strong> y<strong>our</strong> loyalty <strong>and</strong> co-operation, I am,<br />
S<strong>in</strong>cerely y<strong>our</strong>s.<br />
