CHILDHOOD OK B. U. WATKINS 35<br />

people who had not heard a sermon for <strong>years</strong> would flock by<br />

<strong>hundred</strong>s to his call. He is described as mounted on horseback;<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> storms <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter he wore a greatcoat, <strong>and</strong> green<br />

baize legg<strong>in</strong>gs were tied just below his knee with colored cot-<br />

ton tapes; his buffalo overshoes were l<strong>in</strong>ed by turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

hairy side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hide <strong>in</strong>ward — heavy <strong>and</strong> cumbersome <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were, but warm <strong>and</strong> a great protection <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> yet<br />

undiscovered rubber. Many anecdotes are related <strong>of</strong> Lorenzo<br />

Dow. It was an age <strong>of</strong> controversy <strong>and</strong> clash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> creeds,<br />

<strong>and</strong> this itmerant had some modern ideas <strong>of</strong> pedagogy <strong>in</strong> regard<br />

to object lessons. Once at a camp-meet<strong>in</strong>g he wished to<br />

refute <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> "once <strong>in</strong> grace, always <strong>in</strong> grace," so on<br />

a sudden he sprang from <strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> caught hold upon an<br />

extend<strong>in</strong>g limb, shout<strong>in</strong>g, "Hold on, Lorenzo! Hold on,<br />

Lorenzo, for if you don't you'll fall!" Slipp<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong><br />

limb he mounted his horse <strong>and</strong> disappeared <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> woods,<br />

leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> audience to cogitate upon this lesson till he returned<br />

on some o<strong>the</strong>r occasion.<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r had an abundant store <strong>of</strong> anecdotes, enough to<br />

make at least a small volume, <strong>and</strong> this is <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> his concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Lorenzo Dow: He was <strong>one</strong> day rid<strong>in</strong>g on horseback<br />

through a new clear<strong>in</strong>g, when he discovered a man chopp<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The woodsman, see<strong>in</strong>g it was a preacher, slipped from his log<br />

<strong>and</strong> hid. Lorenzo rode up <strong>and</strong> dismounted, <strong>and</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

st<strong>and</strong> upon <strong>the</strong> log which had just been felled he preached a<br />

sermon, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> conclusion made <strong>the</strong> announcement: "Just<br />

<strong>one</strong> year from to-day, no prevent<strong>in</strong>g Providence, I shall be on<br />

this ground <strong>and</strong> will preach." At <strong>the</strong> time appo<strong>in</strong>ted he<br />

came rid<strong>in</strong>g up to <strong>the</strong> clear<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> found a great crowd to<br />

hear his sermon. His wilderness advertis<strong>in</strong>g was a success.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> early it<strong>in</strong>erants was a famous Methodist cir-<br />

cuit rider, Peter Cartwright, a bold, <strong>in</strong>defatigible leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pi<strong>one</strong>ers a man who understood <strong>the</strong> signs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> times, who<br />

made war on s<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> was will<strong>in</strong>g to "maul grace <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

unbeliev<strong>in</strong>g souls" if that were necessary. I remember <strong>one</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r's anecdotes <strong>of</strong> him: He had been preach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wilderness concern<strong>in</strong>g cross-bear<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> shortly afterward,<br />

when rid<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> brush, he noticed a strange
