THE GREEN TREE TAVERN 185<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> at least <strong>one</strong> pair, young eyes spoke to o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

eyes which answered hack aga<strong>in</strong>. It was just <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> love story between <strong>our</strong> elder bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> bright-eyed<br />

Julia Morris. I cannot remember that I had any suspicion <strong>of</strong><br />

what was to be at that time.<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k Bro<strong>the</strong>r William had much <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r's strong<br />

nature, both <strong>in</strong>tellectually <strong>and</strong> socially. At home we learned<br />

to love literature <strong>and</strong> poetry especially, for fa<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>of</strong> a<br />

highly poetical nature, lov<strong>in</strong>g particularly gr<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> sublime<br />

diction. He used to read aloud to mo<strong>the</strong>r any choice bit<br />

he found <strong>in</strong> his read<strong>in</strong>g. She enjoyed hear<strong>in</strong>g him declaim<br />

<strong>in</strong> that clear, sonorous voice <strong>of</strong> his, <strong>and</strong> declared she never<br />

knew how much <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>in</strong> a poem until she had heard <strong>our</strong><br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r read it. I now th<strong>in</strong>k we had rare opportunities, for<br />

<strong>our</strong> day, <strong>in</strong> that we usually heard good diction <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> own<br />

home. Even <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se days <strong>of</strong> superior advantages <strong>the</strong> correct<br />

speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> language is almost rare, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> youth <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunities for hear<strong>in</strong>g it were <strong>in</strong>deed few; but as <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

commonly read aloud <strong>and</strong> declaimed <strong>the</strong> best <strong>and</strong> purest <strong>of</strong><br />

English, I like to th<strong>in</strong>k it gave us a better habit <strong>of</strong> speech. I<br />

shall never hear aga<strong>in</strong> any<strong>one</strong> read David's Psalms with <strong>the</strong><br />

power <strong>and</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> my fa<strong>the</strong>r. Indeed I have not at any<br />

time <strong>in</strong> my hfe heard <strong>the</strong>m read as he could read <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

The young voices that sounded <strong>in</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's room are<br />

always silent now or have lost <strong>the</strong>ir youthful buoyancy. The<br />

freedom <strong>and</strong> gayety <strong>of</strong> spirit were long ago subdued. Little<br />

K<strong>in</strong> no longer darts out at <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> small, sharp ho<strong>of</strong>s on<br />

<strong>the</strong> stair. The naughty pet lambs used <strong>of</strong>ten to spy <strong>the</strong> open<br />

door <strong>and</strong> ascend <strong>the</strong> stairs <strong>in</strong> search <strong>of</strong> mischief. They were<br />

tw<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> kept K<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> alert, for <strong>the</strong>y were noted for<br />

chew<strong>in</strong>g curta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> bedclo<strong>the</strong>s. When she went after <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>the</strong>y ran precipitately down <strong>the</strong> oaken stairway, mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

enough noise for a dozen lambs. I heard <strong>the</strong>y had f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

to be banished to <strong>the</strong> pasture.<br />

Saturday brought a half holiday for <strong>the</strong> boys <strong>and</strong> after<br />

d<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>the</strong>y began to wash <strong>and</strong> dress <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir best to go down to<br />

Lebanon, five miles distant. If <strong>the</strong>y were ever found <strong>in</strong> bad<br />

company I never knew it. As I remember, it was Saturday
