citizens. One morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g I went out to feed my charges,<br />

three pretty heifer calves. As usual I carried out <strong>the</strong> warm<br />

milk <strong>and</strong> placed it <strong>in</strong> position <strong>and</strong> began to call <strong>the</strong>m, but I<br />

called <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>. I went down <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> pasture, but no frisky<br />

calves were <strong>the</strong>re. When I reported <strong>our</strong> loss to mo<strong>the</strong>r she<br />

decided that a thief had come out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night <strong>and</strong> captured<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> had <strong>the</strong>m dressed for market by daylight.<br />

A horse was also stolen from us dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> year, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

side. These were probably be<strong>in</strong>g driven <strong>of</strong>f to be fattened<br />

upon waste from stills. When <strong>the</strong> thieves got <strong>the</strong>m as far as<br />

<strong>the</strong> crossroads two f<strong>in</strong>e hogs made <strong>the</strong>ir escape, so we had <strong>our</strong><br />

own meat that year after all, though not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> usual quantity.<br />

Nor were <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>fts all. Our neighbor, James Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

saved a calf for us once. He was aroused <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night by hear-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g a calf bawl <strong>and</strong> a disturbance <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> barnyard, so he arose<br />

<strong>and</strong> dressed <strong>and</strong> went hurriedly to <strong>in</strong>vestigate, when he discovered<br />

a butcher <strong>and</strong> his wagon st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> big road, with<br />

a large heifer calf bound <strong>and</strong> ready to be lifted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> wagon.<br />

On hear<strong>in</strong>g Mr. Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs approach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> thief left <strong>the</strong> calf<br />

<strong>and</strong> drove rapidly away towards <strong>the</strong> north where <strong>the</strong> road<br />

would lead him over to <strong>the</strong> pike, that he might return speedily<br />

to <strong>the</strong> city <strong>and</strong> be lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> multitude.<br />

James Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs was a good neighbor, <strong>and</strong> both <strong>our</strong> broth-<br />

family <strong>of</strong> f<strong>our</strong> girls, all good <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrious, <strong>and</strong> friends <strong>and</strong><br />

schoolmates <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>s. I remember when <strong>the</strong>y first started to<br />

school, <strong>the</strong> dear little chubby, round-faced girls — Melissa,<br />

Addie, Emma, <strong>and</strong> Ella. James Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs died before old<br />

age, but his good wife, Mrs. Sel<strong>in</strong>a Cumm<strong>in</strong>gs, lived to be<br />

more than 90 <strong>years</strong> old <strong>and</strong> reta<strong>in</strong>ed through all <strong>the</strong> long <strong>years</strong><br />

" <strong>the</strong> ornament <strong>of</strong> a meek <strong>and</strong> quiet spirit" which is above price.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se written memories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past, I have<br />

For more than <strong>fifty</strong> <strong>years</strong> we have been friends, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

letters come to me yet with a lov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest. It is good that<br />
