OUR MOTHER, SOPHRONIA KEELER 41<br />

<strong>our</strong> trundlo-bc'd, where <strong>the</strong> httle brown-eyed mo<strong>the</strong>r told us<br />

Bible stories with such wonderful detail that we thought she<br />

had memorized <strong>the</strong> text, <strong>and</strong> I wondered if I should ever be<br />

able to tell <strong>the</strong>m as she did. I have never been able to do so,<br />

<strong>and</strong> yet I wish I could make her great-gr<strong>and</strong>children know<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> her style <strong>of</strong> story-tell<strong>in</strong>g, for it was a strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gift <strong>of</strong> this dear ancestor <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>s; <strong>and</strong> so I am <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d to try.<br />

Imag<strong>in</strong>e us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trundle-bed <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r sitt<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

quilt<strong>in</strong>g-frames with a c<strong>and</strong>le, or more <strong>of</strong>ten two, throw<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

s<strong>of</strong>t yellow light upon <strong>the</strong> smooth, dark head bent above her<br />

careful needle. Her word-pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, even more pla<strong>in</strong>ly than<br />

<strong>the</strong> picture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> old Bible, made us see, as she related <strong>the</strong><br />

story <strong>of</strong> Daniel <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> lions, <strong>the</strong> rocky, barren den, <strong>the</strong> b<strong>one</strong>s<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g from past feasts, <strong>the</strong> gap<strong>in</strong>g savage beasts, <strong>the</strong> helpless<br />

Daniel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir midst. We knew <strong>the</strong> great climax was<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g; soon <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r would slightly raise her voice to re-<br />

peat with what to us was thrill<strong>in</strong>g oratory, <strong>and</strong> which I re-<br />

member to this day as a gr<strong>and</strong> piece <strong>of</strong> declamation " : My God<br />

hath sent his aiigel, <strong>and</strong> hath shut <strong>the</strong> lions' mouths, that <strong>the</strong>y may<br />

not hurt vie; forasmuch as before him <strong>in</strong>nocency was found <strong>in</strong><br />

me; <strong>and</strong> before <strong>the</strong>e, k<strong>in</strong>g, have I d<strong>one</strong> no hurt."<br />

From her conversation <strong>in</strong> after <strong>years</strong> we know that she had,<br />

as she said, "a thirst for knowledge" <strong>in</strong> those days <strong>of</strong> scant<br />

opportunity; <strong>and</strong> that she used every possible advantage<br />

which came to her we also know. Her share <strong>of</strong> only three<br />

months <strong>in</strong> school gave her a few fundamentals, <strong>and</strong> upon <strong>the</strong>se<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g at her mo<strong>the</strong>r's knee she built an education,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> her bright young m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> hunger for knowl-<br />

edge. The teachers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se three-months schools solicited<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir pupils, <strong>and</strong> were paid <strong>the</strong> paltry sum <strong>of</strong> "two bits" per<br />

pupil for <strong>the</strong> three months <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>struction. Accuracy <strong>and</strong><br />

thoroughness were strong characteristics <strong>of</strong> hers, <strong>and</strong> she<br />

studied <strong>the</strong> primary branches with such diligence that she became<br />

a clear penman, a good <strong>and</strong> correct reader, quick <strong>in</strong> mental<br />

arithmetic, <strong>and</strong> especially f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> geography <strong>and</strong> spell<strong>in</strong>g; she<br />

was known to <strong>the</strong> latest day <strong>of</strong> her life as an accurate speller.<br />

She was so fond <strong>of</strong> <strong>history</strong> that as soon as conditions changed<br />

<strong>in</strong> her life <strong>and</strong> books had <strong>the</strong>ir part she read <strong>and</strong> studied
