OVER THE MOUNTAINS 59<br />

as a religious reformer. Alex<strong>and</strong>er Campbell was a man <strong>of</strong><br />

letters <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> strik<strong>in</strong>g personality.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1834 Love H. Jamieson conducted a protracted<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g for those who were connected with this new<br />

Christian Church <strong>in</strong> Harrison. On <strong>the</strong> front seat sat a little<br />

black-eyed woman with her open Bible <strong>in</strong> her h<strong>and</strong>; as <strong>the</strong><br />

preacher backed up all his assertions with pro<strong>of</strong>-texts from<br />

Scripture, her f<strong>in</strong>gers flew, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> references as fast as he<br />

gave <strong>the</strong>m out. This little woman was Sophronia Keeler.<br />

Among o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>terested auditors that day was <strong>the</strong> fair-complexi<strong>one</strong>d<br />

student, Benjam<strong>in</strong> Utter VVatk<strong>in</strong>s. He sat near <strong>the</strong><br />

young woman, <strong>and</strong> though he saw but dimly he could not<br />

notice how rapidly she found <strong>the</strong> texts which his dear friend,<br />

Love H. Jamieson, gave out. Sophronia Keeler <strong>and</strong> Mr.<br />

Jamieson had already met, for he it was who <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>our</strong><br />

future parents to each o<strong>the</strong>r at fa<strong>the</strong>r's earnest request.<br />

So it was that <strong>the</strong>y met <strong>in</strong> a place where <strong>the</strong>y were both<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested, <strong>and</strong> found <strong>the</strong>n, as ever, that upon all <strong>the</strong> deep<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> life, <strong>the</strong> fundamentals, <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>one</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> <strong>one</strong><br />

soul. It was not long after this first meet<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

married by Elder Hornaday, on August 10, 1834. One day<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> summer, perhaps, <strong>of</strong> 1856, we were go<strong>in</strong>g to Harrison<br />

with fa<strong>the</strong>r, who at stated periods m<strong>in</strong>istered to <strong>the</strong> church at<br />

that place. We passed over <strong>the</strong> Big Miami River at Miamitown,<br />

<strong>and</strong> as we were mount<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty hills <strong>the</strong> scene was full<br />

<strong>of</strong> rare beauty. Long green slopes <strong>and</strong> deep ravmes led up to<br />

<strong>the</strong> tablel<strong>and</strong>s; even <strong>in</strong> that early day between Miamitown<br />

<strong>and</strong> Harrison was a splendid macadam pike, which tracked<br />

its way among <strong>the</strong> green hills <strong>and</strong> valleys, w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>one</strong><br />

po<strong>in</strong>t to ano<strong>the</strong>r among <strong>the</strong> quiet wooded slopes where, <strong>in</strong><br />

verdant pastures, numerous flocks <strong>and</strong> herds were graz<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

How <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r enjoyed driv<strong>in</strong>g over those good roads, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

what rich <strong>in</strong>tonations that deep, sonorous voice <strong>of</strong> his echoed<br />

amongst those hills while he repeated some gr<strong>and</strong> psalm or<br />

hymn <strong>of</strong> praise, as<br />

Safely through ano<strong>the</strong>r week<br />

God has brought us on <strong>our</strong> way,<br />

Let us each a bless<strong>in</strong>g seek<br />

Wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Thy c<strong>our</strong>ts to-day.
