THE OLD FARM 85<br />

gethcr <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>ona, <strong>and</strong> though both were gray-headed we<br />

smiled, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n we sighed, for it had been so long ago<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> chief actor had lived out <strong>the</strong> span <strong>of</strong> his <strong>years</strong>. We<br />

had heard for some time, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> secret fraternity <strong>of</strong> childhood,<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r Will's "pigtail party." Woe unto him or her<br />

who <strong>of</strong>fended <strong>the</strong> eldest <strong>in</strong> those days. Cous<strong>in</strong> Mary Jane did,<br />

<strong>and</strong> her name was stricken from <strong>the</strong> list <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vited guests. I<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k I, too, was blackballed. While <strong>the</strong> men were at d<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

on slaughter day, Bro<strong>the</strong>r Will, who was about twelve <strong>years</strong><br />

old <strong>the</strong>n, climbed out on <strong>the</strong> stout pole where <strong>the</strong> dressed hogs<br />

were suspended by <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>in</strong>d legs <strong>and</strong> cut <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> tail <strong>of</strong> each<br />

for his "pigtail party." My remembrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outcome is<br />

not very dist<strong>in</strong>ct, e.xcept<strong>in</strong>g that Will's skill <strong>in</strong> roast<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

tails <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> his elders as to his amputations did<br />

not comb<strong>in</strong>e to make <strong>the</strong> party a great success, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

yet a memory <strong>of</strong> tears <strong>and</strong> soot on <strong>our</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r's face after <strong>the</strong><br />

party was over. Sam Rogers, <strong>the</strong> hired man, declared he<br />

did not know how to apologize to <strong>the</strong> men <strong>in</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati to<br />

whom he sold those tailless hogs!<br />

All this rem<strong>in</strong>ds me <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> childhood.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> days <strong>of</strong> easy transportation by rail <strong>the</strong> farmers from<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior <strong>of</strong> Indiana <strong>and</strong> Ohio drove <strong>the</strong>ir cattle <strong>and</strong> hogs to<br />

<strong>the</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati market over <strong>the</strong> worst <strong>of</strong> clay roads. It was a<br />

sight <strong>of</strong> much <strong>in</strong>terest to watch a long procession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

drovers com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> solid phalanx, pass<strong>in</strong>g on to <strong>the</strong> city, where<br />

immense slaughter houses waited to receive <strong>the</strong>m. So great<br />

a market was found for <strong>the</strong> sw<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new state <strong>of</strong> Indiana<br />

that C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati came to be called "Porkopolis," <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

village <strong>of</strong> Chicago to <strong>the</strong> northward was not thought <strong>of</strong> as even<br />

a rival <strong>in</strong> embryo.<br />

I recall <strong>one</strong> day <strong>in</strong> particular when I was anxious to cross<br />

<strong>the</strong> road to go down to gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's old house, which had been<br />

repaired for <strong>our</strong> tenant, Anson by name. I had to wait for<br />

h<strong>our</strong>s before it was safe for me to venture across, so rapidly<br />

did <strong>one</strong> great drove <strong>of</strong> hogs follow <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. The porkers<br />

came by <strong>hundred</strong>s, like a stream, roll<strong>in</strong>g over Brown's hill<br />

<strong>and</strong> slid<strong>in</strong>g down to <strong>our</strong> house upon <strong>the</strong> yellow clay made slippery<br />

by an autumn ra<strong>in</strong>. We spoke <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Indiana drovers
