142 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

to this place on a bright, sunsh<strong>in</strong>y Sunday <strong>in</strong> midsummer that<br />

<strong>our</strong> church people resorted to attend <strong>the</strong> solemn ord<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>of</strong><br />

Christian baptism. Oh, how sweetly <strong>the</strong> music floated out<br />

on that rippl<strong>in</strong>g stream, while <strong>the</strong> bluffs on <strong>the</strong> opposite shore<br />

echoed <strong>the</strong> glad refra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> how <strong>the</strong> great grove <strong>of</strong> ancient<br />

sycamores "clapped <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>and</strong>s" that a soul was born anew!<br />

I remember <strong>the</strong> little figure that sat <strong>in</strong> his chair on <strong>the</strong> marg<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> that hmpid pool; <strong>and</strong> after <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> a short address<br />

<strong>the</strong> deacons carried Johnnie <strong>in</strong> his chair out <strong>in</strong>to midstream<br />

<strong>and</strong> laid him gently beneath <strong>the</strong> yield<strong>in</strong>g wave. It was a glad<br />

day for that dear young heart, which had so greatly desired<br />

<strong>the</strong> liberty <strong>of</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g an obedient child <strong>of</strong> God. It caused<br />

<strong>the</strong> shadows to lift from a difficult pathway <strong>and</strong> some shafts <strong>of</strong><br />

light to fall across it from <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> perfect day.<br />

Uncle Jimmie McCash was a man <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e natural gifts; he<br />

had a good memory <strong>and</strong> read <strong>the</strong> literature <strong>of</strong> his day. He<br />

could tell both <strong>the</strong> religious <strong>and</strong> pohtical <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> l<strong>and</strong>,<br />

nam<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> presidents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir regular order <strong>and</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir various adm<strong>in</strong>istrations. Many a<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g he has come down to <strong>our</strong> house on <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> his horses,<br />

opened <strong>the</strong> kitchen door, <strong>and</strong> found us at breakfast. Before<br />

he left he would be almost certa<strong>in</strong> to refer to some anecdote <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>history</strong>, show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bent <strong>of</strong> his active m<strong>in</strong>d. The daily<br />

papers <strong>and</strong> multiplicity <strong>of</strong> books <strong>of</strong> to-day seem to <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> my<br />

generation to overfeed <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. In those days we had little<br />

time to read or discuss trifles, but with <strong>the</strong> clarify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

<strong>of</strong> fresh air <strong>and</strong> muscular toil permeat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds, <strong>the</strong> old<br />

neighbors when <strong>the</strong>y met selected some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> very greatest<br />

topics for <strong>the</strong>ir conversation, <strong>and</strong> healthy <strong>and</strong> wholesome discussion<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten occurred <strong>in</strong> those farm homes <strong>of</strong> long ago. Let<br />

not <strong>the</strong> generations reign<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se feel that <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>ancestors</strong> were <strong>in</strong> any way unworthy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir children 's prog-<br />

ress, success, <strong>and</strong> mental atta<strong>in</strong>ments, for <strong>the</strong>se <strong>ancestors</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>our</strong>s belonged to a time when some <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> yet unexcelled heritage<br />

was written <strong>and</strong> sung.<br />

After Uncle Jimmie had g<strong>one</strong> back to his farm work<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r would <strong>of</strong>ten remark on <strong>the</strong> great activity <strong>of</strong> his mental<br />

powers, <strong>and</strong> he expressed himself as behev<strong>in</strong>g that, had he
