OVER THE MOUNTAINS 6i<br />

about <strong>the</strong> fireside <strong>of</strong> that first little home. Church <strong>history</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Bible literature were <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> subjects. Mo<strong>the</strong>r had c<strong>and</strong>le<br />

molds <strong>and</strong> plenty <strong>of</strong> c<strong>and</strong>les, so we fancy <strong>the</strong> picture <strong>our</strong> parents<br />

made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir youth — mo<strong>the</strong>r with her dark head, upon which<br />

rested <strong>the</strong> matron's cap, <strong>and</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r, a contrast with his fair<br />

rudd<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> already silver<strong>in</strong>g locks — <strong>the</strong>y sit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>one</strong><br />

room, with c<strong>and</strong>les lighted <strong>and</strong> an open book, perhaps Josephus<br />

or D'Aubigne's History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformation or Rawl<strong>in</strong>s'<br />

Ancient History, or it may have been <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> popular poems<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir day — Paradise Lost or Young's Night Thoughts;<br />

<strong>and</strong> so it was that <strong>the</strong>ir little home came to be like Jacob's<br />

ladder, a very gate <strong>of</strong> Paradise. i<br />

All <strong>the</strong> time <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r was prepar<strong>in</strong>g himself to m<strong>in</strong>ister<br />

to <strong>the</strong> church, which <strong>in</strong> those days dem<strong>and</strong>ed real meat <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> brightest <strong>and</strong> best presentation a preacher could give. The<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period were hardy, hungry <strong>and</strong> strong, not dis-<br />

sipated but ready to direct <strong>the</strong>ir whole attention to what <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>ister had to give, <strong>and</strong> auditors felt defrauded were no<br />

thought required <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Thus it was that <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

delighted <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g thoughtful, solid sermons, which his<br />

love for <strong>the</strong> sublime made him able to clo<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong> beautiful<br />

words for peroration or eloquent climax.<br />

Our mo<strong>the</strong>r was ever an <strong>in</strong>terested listener, who was by his<br />

side <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir even<strong>in</strong>gs at home to learn all that she could.<br />

With her sew<strong>in</strong>g or knitt<strong>in</strong>g, work that occupied so much<br />

time, she was still at hberty to hsten <strong>and</strong> learn. The desire<br />

for self-improvement <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong> knowledge was<br />

an unquenched flame <strong>in</strong> that home where all <strong>our</strong> homes began,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y made <strong>the</strong>ir opportunities for learn<strong>in</strong>g over a hard,<br />

rough <strong>and</strong> shadowed way when we compare <strong>the</strong>ir advantages<br />

with those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir gr<strong>and</strong>children <strong>and</strong> great-gr<strong>and</strong>children.<br />

We may be thankful that noble <strong>in</strong>telligences <strong>and</strong> pious spirits<br />

burned with <strong>the</strong>ir own light <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> little cab<strong>in</strong> on gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

farm.<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r was a prudent bus<strong>in</strong>ess woman; Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joseph<br />

<strong>and</strong> I have <strong>of</strong>ten spoken <strong>of</strong> her ability <strong>in</strong> that l<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> his<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> his traits <strong>of</strong> caution <strong>and</strong> acumen com-<br />

b<strong>in</strong>ed he seemed to have <strong>in</strong>herited from her. Early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir
