86 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

as "Hoosiers." They were a stalwart race <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> backwoods<br />

type, dressed <strong>in</strong> homespun, a wamus or hunt<strong>in</strong>g jacket <strong>of</strong> heavy<br />

home-made woolen, dyed with butternut bark; coarse woolen<br />

shirts, boots <strong>of</strong> cowhide made on ancient lasts, hav<strong>in</strong>g peculiar<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted toes; hair long <strong>and</strong> unkempt <strong>and</strong> a general appearance<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wilderness country from which <strong>the</strong>y had come.<br />

The droves were always accompanied by <strong>the</strong> gigantic<br />

scho<strong>one</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a Pennsylvania wagon, where <strong>the</strong>y carried a large<br />

cribful <strong>of</strong> corn, a day's rations for each drove. I recall that<br />

once <strong>in</strong> this season <strong>the</strong>re came a raw, cold day when <strong>the</strong> mud<br />

was Hke mortar <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> big hogs were fall<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> halffrozen<br />

slush. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m had to be lifted by <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drovers <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania scho<strong>one</strong>r to be<br />

carried until <strong>the</strong>y could march aga<strong>in</strong>. It was some task to<br />

get <strong>the</strong>se heavy porkers dragged up by ropes <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> wagon.<br />

On this particular day, as <strong>the</strong>y were pass<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> house <strong>the</strong><br />

drovers discovered <strong>our</strong> big clean orchard, <strong>and</strong> as night was<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>y felt <strong>the</strong>y could not take <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r over such treacherous roads, so <strong>the</strong>y asked if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

might drive <strong>the</strong>ir hogs <strong>in</strong>to <strong>our</strong> orchard <strong>and</strong> stay all night at<br />

<strong>our</strong> house. Fa<strong>the</strong>r came <strong>in</strong> to talk it over with mo<strong>the</strong>r, for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir pitiable pHght touched his sympathies, <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r con-<br />

sented to keep <strong>the</strong> entire crowd. I should th<strong>in</strong>k, as well as<br />

I can remember, <strong>the</strong>re must have been fifteen men <strong>in</strong> all, who<br />

were wet, muddy <strong>and</strong> tired to complete exhaustion. We built<br />

a great fire <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> open fireplace, <strong>and</strong> as soon as supper was over<br />

we all went upstairs to bed <strong>and</strong> left <strong>the</strong> drovers down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

front room by <strong>the</strong> big fireplace. They dried <strong>the</strong>ir wet cloth-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g; mo<strong>the</strong>r furnished <strong>the</strong>m covers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y lay down on <strong>the</strong><br />

floor before <strong>the</strong> fire <strong>and</strong> slept until about f<strong>our</strong> o'clock <strong>the</strong> next<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g, when all h<strong>and</strong>s were out to feed <strong>the</strong> drove so as to<br />

get an early start. Fa<strong>the</strong>r's corncrib furnished food for <strong>the</strong><br />

hungry pigs.<br />

That morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> men brought <strong>in</strong> a backlog <strong>and</strong> built a<br />

great fire, which so heated <strong>the</strong> chimney that it too caught<br />

fire. I was sleep<strong>in</strong>g upstairs <strong>and</strong> was suddenly aroused by <strong>the</strong><br />

loud roar <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chimney, <strong>and</strong> I thought <strong>the</strong> whole house was<br />

on fire; I looked out <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow <strong>and</strong> found <strong>the</strong> orchard illumi-
