HOME BUILDING IN MINNESOTA 243<br />

Perhaps it may be <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest to state here that he lost this<br />

cannon ball down by <strong>the</strong> shore <strong>of</strong> Lake Pearl some time dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his residence <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>and</strong> many <strong>years</strong> afterward, when he <strong>and</strong> I<br />

went back to Ma<strong>in</strong>e Prairie to see to <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> moth-<br />

er's rema<strong>in</strong>s from <strong>the</strong> grave by <strong>the</strong> lake shore to Wmona, lie<br />

found his long-lost cannon ball.<br />

After <strong>the</strong>y left Cairo, while j<strong>our</strong>ney<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> Mississippi,<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joe was taken with sciatica, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horses<br />

fell upon <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r, which was difficult for him on <strong>the</strong> boat<br />

because <strong>of</strong> his bl<strong>in</strong>dness. Had it not been for <strong>the</strong> assistance<br />

<strong>of</strong> Will Hughes this would have been still harder, as <strong>the</strong> horses<br />

were on <strong>the</strong> lower deck next to <strong>the</strong> side wheel, <strong>and</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r ran<br />

some risk, with his l<strong>in</strong>fited sight, <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g his way among <strong>the</strong><br />

mach<strong>in</strong>ery. Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joe was taken with sciatica very sudden-<br />

ly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night <strong>and</strong> suffered <strong>in</strong>tensely; when he got out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g his face was so drawn <strong>and</strong> white that Ida did not at<br />

first recognize her bro<strong>the</strong>r, ravaged by pa<strong>in</strong> as he was. Here<br />

<strong>our</strong> people were, taken by surprise without medic<strong>in</strong>e or doctor.<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r was a practical nurse <strong>and</strong> got hot water <strong>and</strong> flat-<br />

irons <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y reached St. Paul, with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong><br />

a cane <strong>and</strong> a crutch <strong>our</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r got on shore. It is recalled to<br />

me that fa<strong>the</strong>r met Dr. William Hall on board, who gave Joe<br />

some medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

When <strong>the</strong>y reached Lake Pipp<strong>in</strong> all ice had disappeared<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y entered St. Paul with hearts <strong>of</strong> thankfulness. Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was ever a man <strong>of</strong> strong faith, nightly committ<strong>in</strong>g all to <strong>the</strong><br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> his Heavenly Fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> each morn<strong>in</strong>g receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> renewal <strong>of</strong> His mercies with gratitude. Through all <strong>our</strong><br />

lives <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> parents' home we children depended on <strong>the</strong>ir strong<br />

faith. At Carnelian Lake I was gett<strong>in</strong>g ready for <strong>the</strong> glad<br />

day when <strong>our</strong> loved parents <strong>and</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> sister <strong>and</strong> Will's<br />

wife <strong>and</strong> baby should be with us. Homesick as I was for Ohio,<br />

I felt that with <strong>the</strong>se dear <strong>one</strong>s near us I might be satisfied to<br />

live almost anywhere.<br />

I shall never forget <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1 862. Never<br />

before <strong>in</strong> my life had I seen so slow a dawn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> green.<br />

Our first wedd<strong>in</strong>g anniversary (May 5, 1862) was without <strong>the</strong><br />

signs <strong>of</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gtime <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota that we had always enjoyed
