OUR SPRINGTIME 117<br />

<strong>the</strong>y ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> best room, with fa<strong>the</strong>r as host <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

as caterer, wliilc <strong>the</strong> savory odor <strong>of</strong> ham <strong>and</strong> eggs pervaded<br />

<strong>the</strong> air <strong>and</strong> perhaps a warm stirred cake, turned out <strong>of</strong> its pan<br />

to cool, added its good fragrance.<br />

Aram<strong>in</strong>ta had been carefully reared <strong>and</strong> was a young lady<br />

<strong>of</strong> education <strong>and</strong> ref<strong>in</strong>ement, whose husb<strong>and</strong> was devotion<br />

itself to her. She was sweet <strong>and</strong> pretty <strong>and</strong> had some nice<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s. I recall that she had a black silk dress such as matrons<br />

wore <strong>in</strong> those days upon dress occasions. This good<br />

gown was brought out upon Sunday morn<strong>in</strong>g, when her doctor<br />

husb<strong>and</strong> decided that it was too tight <strong>and</strong> needed <strong>the</strong> seams<br />

to be let out. Later we heard that when she reached <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

more fastidious relatives <strong>in</strong> Kentucky <strong>the</strong> black silk was pronounced<br />

too loose to suit <strong>the</strong> closely fitt<strong>in</strong>g fashion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day.<br />

This was <strong>the</strong> last visit <strong>our</strong> relatives made to us dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's life. We found Dr. Butterfield f<strong>in</strong>e company,<br />

<strong>and</strong> many a merry romp we had with him. He <strong>and</strong> Cous<strong>in</strong><br />

Aram<strong>in</strong>ta were devout members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian Church.<br />

Dr. Butterfield wrote a number <strong>of</strong> poems, which he had published.<br />

When <strong>the</strong>y visited us Miss Nailer, a bright young<br />

teacher, boarded with us. She had an accordion, an <strong>in</strong>strument<br />

<strong>the</strong>n much <strong>in</strong> vogue <strong>and</strong> upon which she played nicely.<br />

One even<strong>in</strong>g Miss Nailer <strong>and</strong> Dr. Butterfield sang, she accompany<strong>in</strong>g<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> accordion. Our evident good time aroused<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's curiosity, <strong>and</strong> he asked that <strong>the</strong>y play <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for him. Doctor raised <strong>the</strong> bass notes on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>strument, <strong>and</strong><br />

oh, such a horrid growl as issued, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

discord. Of c<strong>our</strong>se we all laughed immoderately, <strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was pleased with <strong>the</strong> results upon us, although he could<br />

not hear a s<strong>in</strong>gle sound.<br />

I am glad that I can present <strong>in</strong> this <strong>history</strong> a picture <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong><br />

who was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> pi<strong>one</strong>er party that came over <strong>the</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s so long ago. W^e have no likeness <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>our</strong><br />

gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r or gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r, but <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> his gr<strong>and</strong>children has<br />

furnished me a copy <strong>of</strong> a picture <strong>of</strong> Uncle Robert Utter. I<br />

am surprised to f<strong>in</strong>d that it has a real resemblance to <strong>our</strong><br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y both seem<strong>in</strong>g to have <strong>in</strong>herited <strong>the</strong> looks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

Badgley <strong>ancestors</strong>.
