OUR SPRINGTIME 105<br />

<strong>the</strong> meadow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wake <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old goose <strong>and</strong> her fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Hock! Later a prickly little body was soused <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> barrel<br />

to soo<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong> overheated follower <strong>of</strong> gosl<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> favorite resorts was <strong>the</strong> old barn built by <strong>our</strong><br />

gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> 181 2. To <strong>our</strong> young m<strong>in</strong>ds it was a marvel <strong>of</strong><br />

ever chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest. It was <strong>our</strong> gymnasium, where to drop<br />

from a l<strong>of</strong>ty beam to <strong>the</strong> mow below was an excit<strong>in</strong>g feat, <strong>and</strong><br />

where <strong>our</strong> performances had danger's thrill; for <strong>in</strong>stance, once<br />

I was walk<strong>in</strong>g a bridge made <strong>of</strong> pitchforks covered with hay<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y came apart <strong>and</strong> I descended with violence, unfortunately<br />

upon a poor little kitten <strong>of</strong> a new batch liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>re. Ano<strong>the</strong>r acrobatic feat risked Ida's little b<strong>one</strong>s. She<br />

<strong>and</strong> Joe were play<strong>in</strong>g "Hide <strong>and</strong> Whoop," <strong>and</strong> she was search-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g for him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mow but was not successful, so she said:<br />

"I just don't believe you are up here at all!" Utter silence<br />

greeted her, so she cont<strong>in</strong>ued, "If you are up here I'll just<br />

jump <strong>of</strong>t' this l<strong>of</strong>t!" Gleefully he sprang up from <strong>the</strong> hay at<br />

once, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> plucky little sister ga<strong>the</strong>red herself toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong><br />

jumped, l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g on that old rail floor below where <strong>the</strong> cover-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> hay was very th<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> jarr<strong>in</strong>g herself most terribly.<br />

The open space at <strong>the</strong> rear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barn was a nice place for<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r's geese. On St. Valent<strong>in</strong>e's day <strong>the</strong>y, with great<br />

propriety, chose <strong>the</strong>ir mates, <strong>and</strong> two by two <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

walk proudly under <strong>the</strong> barn <strong>and</strong> make <strong>the</strong>ir nests. Will<br />

would creep under a little later <strong>and</strong> on h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> knees would<br />

look for eggs, which he found covered up with s<strong>of</strong>test down.<br />

These he brought out <strong>in</strong> his cap. After a while, however, we<br />

left <strong>the</strong>m to hatch <strong>in</strong> those s<strong>of</strong>t nests whose l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

goose had plucked from her own breast, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n we waited<br />

for <strong>the</strong> signal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old g<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Goose with her s<strong>of</strong>t, downy brood. She headed at once for <strong>the</strong><br />

pond to give her children <strong>the</strong>ir first bath, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y acted much<br />

better than human young on similar occasions. Once when<br />

Will was under <strong>the</strong> barn he found <strong>the</strong> Httle wagon gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

had made for him, to which he had tried to add a propeller,<br />

as such wagons have now. This is <strong>the</strong> little wagon <strong>of</strong> which<br />

I wrote <strong>in</strong> a previous chapter. It happened that later gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g become <strong>of</strong>fended with "Billigee," had hidden
