THE GREEN TREE TAVERN 183<br />

age <strong>of</strong> sixty-f<strong>our</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g suffered so iiiucli with her eyes that<br />

she went bl<strong>in</strong>d. Her wonderful <strong>in</strong>dustry, her night vigils<br />

with sick children <strong>in</strong> her large family, her unceas<strong>in</strong>g care,<br />

make this mild-tempered little gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r well worthy <strong>of</strong><br />

memory even to many generations. It is fitt<strong>in</strong>g that we give<br />

Mary Sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Morris someth<strong>in</strong>g more than pass<strong>in</strong>g notice.<br />

Transplanted early from her peaceful New Jersey home <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> wilderness <strong>of</strong> Ohio; obliged at first to live <strong>in</strong> a fort; married<br />

young — what experiences were hers! She was five feet <strong>in</strong><br />

height <strong>and</strong> slightly built, but <strong>of</strong> such a m<strong>in</strong>d that Uncle John<br />

Hunt was used to say that if <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> Benjam<strong>in</strong> Morris<br />

displayed any unusual brightness it should be accredited to<br />

his wife. When we recall <strong>the</strong> toils <strong>and</strong> hardships <strong>in</strong>cident to<br />

<strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great commonwealth <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> beloved<br />

Ohio, we should th<strong>in</strong>k not only <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>rs, but <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> part<br />

such mo<strong>the</strong>rs as Mary Morris played <strong>in</strong> its early development.<br />

You, her great-gr<strong>and</strong>children, may rightly be proud <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

work to which she gave her life. She is <strong>of</strong> a type <strong>of</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are n<strong>one</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. We f<strong>in</strong>d some <strong>of</strong> her characteristics<br />

<strong>in</strong> Proverbs 31 : "She seeketh wool <strong>and</strong> flax <strong>and</strong> worketh will-<br />

<strong>in</strong>gly with her h<strong>and</strong>s. She riseth early while it is yet night<br />

<strong>and</strong> giveth meat to her household. She openeth her mouth<br />

with wisdom <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> her tongue is <strong>the</strong> law <strong>of</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dness. Her<br />

c<strong>and</strong>le goeth not out by night. She layeth her h<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong><br />

sp<strong>in</strong>dle, her h<strong>and</strong> holdeth <strong>the</strong> distaff."<br />

Mary Sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Morris passed on, but when I was at Green<br />

Tree <strong>the</strong>re was still her daughter, Jerusha Morris Hunt, who<br />

lived near at Red Lion <strong>and</strong> whom I came to know so well.<br />

In her large family <strong>of</strong> good children Mary Morris lives with us<br />

still. You who own her little sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g wheels should not for-<br />

get <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s so long folded to rest.<br />

There were <strong>in</strong> this attic some boxes <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs Mr. Morris<br />

had used when he taught school, for he had been a teacher<br />

<strong>and</strong> a pr<strong>in</strong>ter <strong>in</strong> his time. This recalls to me an old book now<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> his gr<strong>and</strong>son, Paul Watk<strong>in</strong>s, called "The<br />

White Pilgrim," which I believe Isaac Morris himself pr<strong>in</strong>ted.<br />

There were also trunks up <strong>the</strong>re conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, amongst o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs, old clo<strong>the</strong>s, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m very ancient garments. One
