CHANGES IN THE OLD HOME<br />

as<br />

as<br />

Zi s^<br />

HE h<strong>one</strong>ymoon over, <strong>the</strong> thoughts <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> bride<br />

<strong>and</strong> groom turned to <strong>the</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

home. Our fa<strong>the</strong>r decided to rent <strong>the</strong> farm to<br />

<strong>the</strong> young people, while he would take charge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Harrison Church, some twenty miles<br />

west on <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e between Ohio <strong>and</strong> Indiana,<br />

<strong>and</strong> plans were matur<strong>in</strong>g to that effect. The<br />

dairy, which had been pr<strong>of</strong>itably followed, was pushed to<br />

<strong>one</strong> side as <strong>the</strong> cows had g<strong>one</strong> dry. The milk crocks were<br />

placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cellar to stay until spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> "works shut<br />

down."<br />

Our parents had to struggle to build this frame house, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> fact through all <strong>the</strong>ir lives it had been a long pull on an uphill<br />

road. After build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> house, some <strong>years</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervened<br />

before we could f<strong>in</strong>ish it. As <strong>of</strong>ten happened, it was <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

who had <strong>the</strong> head to plan <strong>and</strong> carry forward what she had<br />

planned to a victorious conclusion. It was <strong>the</strong> <strong>one</strong> great m„ate-<br />

rial desire <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> hves to see <strong>our</strong> house pa<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> shutters<br />

put on, which had for <strong>years</strong> been used as a ceil<strong>in</strong>g for an unf<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

room upstairs. One day a letter came from Xenia,<br />

Ohio, from a son <strong>of</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r's old friend W<strong>in</strong>ans, ask<strong>in</strong>g him to<br />

take as a boarder his daughter, who was convalesc<strong>in</strong>g from a<br />

fever. He was an attorney at law <strong>and</strong> a man <strong>of</strong> means <strong>and</strong><br />

could make it worth while to take <strong>the</strong> extra care <strong>the</strong> child<br />
