THE OLD FARM 73<br />

<strong>in</strong>g. It seems she was tell<strong>in</strong>g mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a bundle <strong>of</strong> woolen<br />

yarn she wished her gr<strong>and</strong>daughter Rachel Cole to have, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>n she added a number <strong>of</strong> bequests; but this is <strong>the</strong> only item<br />

I can recall. After she was g<strong>one</strong> I asked what it was that made<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r cry, <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r told me that poor gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

thought that she was go<strong>in</strong>g to die, but that she <strong>of</strong>ten felt that<br />

way; <strong>and</strong> <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r spoke <strong>in</strong> such an assur<strong>in</strong>g manner that<br />

I thought little <strong>of</strong> it. Not long after this, as she was stepp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> back door she had a hard fall <strong>and</strong> hurt her breast,<br />

but this was not thought to be serious. I have wondered<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce if this accident might not have been a remote cause <strong>of</strong><br />

what followed.<br />

One cold, frosty morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> October <strong>the</strong> old people were up<br />

early <strong>and</strong> had old Fannie hitched to <strong>the</strong> little Jersey wagon.<br />

Our fa<strong>the</strong>r, a hired man <strong>and</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>r Will were to go to <strong>the</strong> city<br />

to do some trad<strong>in</strong>g that day, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y started out with <strong>our</strong><br />

gr<strong>and</strong>parents, who seemed <strong>in</strong> good health <strong>and</strong> spirits. Old<br />

Fannie was a balker <strong>and</strong> had <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> her unfortunate moods.<br />

When she reached "Acorn Hill," or "Raymond's Hill" as it<br />

was called, <strong>our</strong> folks had to unload <strong>and</strong> walk up <strong>the</strong> little<br />

steep pitch. Our fa<strong>the</strong>r was walk<strong>in</strong>g by his mo<strong>the</strong>r's side<br />

when she suddenly cried out, "Oh, that old pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> my heart!"<br />

<strong>and</strong> dropped to <strong>the</strong> ground. When fa<strong>the</strong>r stooped to assist<br />

her she was breath<strong>in</strong>g a deep, apoplectic snore. He ran a<br />

short distance over <strong>the</strong> field to Dr. Beach's, but on his return<br />

she had passed away. This was about sunrise; mo<strong>the</strong>r was<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g breakfast for us <strong>and</strong> we were still <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> trundle-bed<br />

when fa<strong>the</strong>r came <strong>in</strong> all breathless, his face red from his haste.<br />

Open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> door he leaned back aga<strong>in</strong>st it <strong>and</strong> delivered <strong>the</strong><br />

astonish<strong>in</strong>g news, "Mo<strong>the</strong>r's dead!"<br />

Thus upon October 31, 1843, occurred <strong>the</strong> first tragedy <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>our</strong> lives — <strong>the</strong> lesson <strong>of</strong> death that so<strong>one</strong>r or later all must<br />

learn. At once mo<strong>the</strong>r made <strong>the</strong> house ready to receive <strong>the</strong><br />

lifeless form <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r. Neighbors came, bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her body on a bier <strong>the</strong>y had hastily prepared. I can never<br />

forget that home-com<strong>in</strong>g nor <strong>the</strong> awful majesty <strong>of</strong> her appearance<br />

as she lay <strong>the</strong>re wrapped <strong>in</strong> her shawl with her hood still<br />

tied over her beautiful white hair. I noticed that <strong>the</strong> blood
