upon hmi <strong>and</strong> walked away from him. Whereupon he arose<br />

upon <strong>in</strong>dignant p<strong>in</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> whir-r-r! he flew to afar distance,<br />

probably tell<strong>in</strong>g her <strong>the</strong>re were better-look<strong>in</strong>g hens than she<br />

little prairie hen, away <strong>of</strong>f" <strong>the</strong>re by her poor l<strong>one</strong>some self!<br />

I knew a man with a large family, who lived by his daily<br />

labor; he was always light-hearted, <strong>and</strong> never compla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>of</strong><br />

trouble or hard times. When asked how he was gett<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

<strong>and</strong> how he lived, he would reply, "On short cake, but <strong>the</strong> only<br />

Jim Lane, <strong>the</strong> hired man, became mad at a neighbor <strong>and</strong><br />

wrote him an abusive letter, call<strong>in</strong>g him hard names, such as<br />

"devil." Mo<strong>the</strong>r had taught us this was wrong, <strong>and</strong> <strong>one</strong> day,<br />

when be<strong>in</strong>g tormented by his bro<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>in</strong> a fit <strong>of</strong> great exasperation<br />

little Joe said to Will: "You're what Jim wrote!"<br />

Poetical Gifts<br />

Our fa<strong>the</strong>r was someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a poet; he loved M<strong>in</strong>nesota<br />

<strong>and</strong> wrote "Autumnal Days" <strong>in</strong> that state.<br />

Datus Myers, his son-<strong>in</strong>-law, parodied this <strong>in</strong> a manner to<br />
