ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

to be shipped outside <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>nesota, <strong>and</strong> so it came to pass<br />

that Santa Claus disappeared from his booth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> markethouse<br />

<strong>of</strong> C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati.<br />

We found many natural res<strong>our</strong>ces <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> new home; <strong>the</strong><br />

tamarack swamps gave firewood <strong>and</strong> paHngs for fences; <strong>the</strong><br />

marsh l<strong>and</strong>s yielded hay; <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> was good. The break<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sod without fur<strong>the</strong>r cultivation gave a good crop <strong>of</strong> potatoes,<br />

turnips, <strong>and</strong> white beans <strong>the</strong> first season. Mr. Stanley was an<br />

excellent host <strong>and</strong> took delight <strong>in</strong> show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>F <strong>the</strong> new country.<br />

He took William <strong>and</strong> Alvah out to look at l<strong>and</strong>s to suit <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

which resulted <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> rent<strong>in</strong>g a farm with a good two-story log<br />

house, a team, <strong>and</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g implements. Bro<strong>the</strong>r William<br />

also rented a tract <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> with a house upon it, which he called<br />

<strong>the</strong> "Shadow Place," as he said that upon exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> title<br />

he found it had but <strong>the</strong> shadow <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong>! This name f<strong>in</strong>ally degenerated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to "The Shad." The place was <strong>the</strong>n vacant, <strong>the</strong> man<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> army <strong>and</strong> his wife at home with her mo<strong>the</strong>r. As<br />

<strong>the</strong> place we had rented would not be vacant until spr<strong>in</strong>g, we<br />

all moved <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Shadow Place as soon as arrangements could<br />

be made.<br />

Mr. Stanley did haul<strong>in</strong>g between St. Cloud <strong>and</strong> St. Paul,<br />

<strong>and</strong> passed near St. Francis on his route up <strong>the</strong> river, so he<br />

agreed to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>our</strong> goods up for us. We had returned to pack<br />

up <strong>and</strong> have <strong>our</strong> goods at <strong>the</strong> crossroads about f<strong>our</strong> miles from<br />

St. Francis, where Mr. Stanley could load <strong>the</strong>m on without<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> his way. This plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong>s, however, was frustrated,<br />

<strong>and</strong> so Mr. Stanley drove clear to <strong>our</strong> door, where he<br />

found us ready to move <strong>and</strong> very thankful to him for be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

better than his barga<strong>in</strong>. We all started early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Our th<strong>in</strong>gs were packed <strong>in</strong> two wagons; we had some chickens,<br />

a pig, a new stove, two bedsteads, <strong>and</strong> some chairs.<br />

We had picked up a poor homeless boy who had lost his<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r had married aga<strong>in</strong>, so he had come out<br />

with his sister from near Boston to f<strong>in</strong>d a home <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new<br />

country. Amos was a live Yankee, who was efiicient <strong>and</strong> as<br />

tough as a p<strong>in</strong>e knot, <strong>in</strong>ured to hardship, <strong>and</strong> need<strong>in</strong>g a home,<br />

so it seemed wise to take him <strong>in</strong>to <strong>our</strong> home; he was <strong>the</strong> forerunner<br />

<strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs who have shared <strong>our</strong> abode as <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
