struck <strong>of</strong>f for <strong>the</strong> pathless forest, never more to be seen <strong>in</strong> that<br />

vic<strong>in</strong>ity.<br />

"Some Big Wor-rds"<br />

A farmer had an Irish work h<strong>and</strong> on his place who soUcited<br />

his assistance <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> old country. The farmer asked<br />

him what he should write. He replied, "Write most anyth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

but be shure to put <strong>in</strong> some big wor-rds like Con-stan-ti-nople!"<br />

The Prospect <strong>of</strong> Go<strong>in</strong>g to War<br />

New Jersey was <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stamp<strong>in</strong>g-grounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolu-<br />

tion. The <strong>in</strong>vasion had not yet reached sou<strong>the</strong>rn New Jersey<br />

when a citizen <strong>of</strong> that part heard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> British<br />

troops at a nor<strong>the</strong>rn port <strong>of</strong> his colony. He felt very brave <strong>and</strong><br />

warlike, <strong>and</strong> marched forth with his matchlock, which he fired<br />

<strong>in</strong>to empty space, roar<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> same time, "Take that! That's<br />

<strong>the</strong> way I'll fix you fellers when you come down here!" As<br />

news <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> progress southward <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British came, <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>our</strong>age <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> patriotic citizen began to fizzle, <strong>and</strong> as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

approach was imm<strong>in</strong>ent he got "cold feet" <strong>and</strong> rushed <strong>of</strong>f to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Quakers to apply for membership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir society, so well<br />

known for <strong>the</strong>ir refusal to go to war from pr<strong>in</strong>ciple.<br />

The Quaker elder <strong>in</strong>terrogated him as to his fitness to become<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir peaceful association, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally said:<br />

"We heard <strong>the</strong>e shot at <strong>the</strong> British," which proved to be a<br />

stumper to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idate, who stammered out, "I no hurt<br />

anybody."<br />

An Allegory<br />

I was plow<strong>in</strong>g for Haudie Bennett, <strong>and</strong> next me was a<br />

strip <strong>of</strong> recently burnt prairie where I spied a l<strong>one</strong>some prairie<br />

hen st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g with her head erect <strong>and</strong> evidently expect<strong>in</strong>g company.<br />

Soon along came a prairie rooster sail<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong><br />

air with outspread w<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> lit down beside her. He began<br />

demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> beauty <strong>of</strong> his fea<strong>the</strong>rs. He strutted <strong>and</strong><br />

crowed <strong>and</strong> cooed, show<strong>in</strong>g her what a f<strong>in</strong>e boy he was. He did<br />

his best, with f<strong>in</strong>e circumlocution, while <strong>the</strong> prairie hen stood<br />

demurely <strong>the</strong>re pretend<strong>in</strong>g not to see him, tak<strong>in</strong>g no notice <strong>of</strong>
