CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH OF B. U. WATKINS<br />

HE <strong>years</strong> came <strong>and</strong> went, <strong>and</strong> brought out <strong>of</strong><br />

meager beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs many improvements. Damask<br />

roses clung to <strong>the</strong> pillars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> porch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

frame house <strong>and</strong> filled <strong>the</strong> air with fragrance.<br />

A large garden with a sou<strong>the</strong>rn slope was enclosed<br />

by a fence <strong>of</strong> pal<strong>in</strong>gs which gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

had split from hickory logs. Along this fence<br />

<strong>the</strong>y planted cherry trees — what a high beautiful hedge <strong>the</strong>y<br />

made! By <strong>the</strong> gate sweet daffodils <strong>and</strong> narcissus bent <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

perfumed heads <strong>and</strong> artichokes grew. Tall sunflowers flaunted<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir heavy crowns <strong>of</strong> gold with<strong>in</strong> that garden fence, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />

bowered <strong>the</strong> wonderful Mayduke cherry tree, chang<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

<strong>the</strong> season from fragrant bloom to delicious, juicy fruit. Some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visions which had brightened <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>parents' first<br />

hard <strong>and</strong> barren days had come true; it is good to th<strong>in</strong>k that<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir labor was not <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>, <strong>and</strong> that for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> wilderness did<br />

truly blossom as <strong>the</strong> rose. Wheat-fields waved before <strong>the</strong><br />

June breezes; dark, rank corn filled <strong>the</strong> lowl<strong>and</strong>s with a prospect<br />

delightful to see; <strong>the</strong> orchard trees were heavy with fruit.<br />

A certa<strong>in</strong> apple tree, it may have been <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> Great-gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Badgley's seedl<strong>in</strong>gs, bore sixty bushels <strong>of</strong> apples <strong>one</strong><br />

summer, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong>nceforth known as <strong>the</strong> "sixty-bushel<br />

tree.<br />

Inside <strong>the</strong> garden pal<strong>in</strong>gs gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r built dry<strong>in</strong>g kilns,<br />
