ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

day I happened to look out to <strong>the</strong> gate <strong>of</strong> Green Tree, when<br />

my eyes beheld a couple <strong>of</strong> strange objects, <strong>and</strong> I called to<br />

Aunt 'Rusha Sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>quire what it all meant. She<br />

laughed <strong>and</strong> told me that K<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> a Fitzgerald girl had been<br />

visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> attic <strong>and</strong> were "dressed up" <strong>and</strong> out for a walk,<br />

probably bound for "Red Lion." They were called back,<br />

however, <strong>and</strong> returned reluctantly — absurd little figures <strong>in</strong><br />

old-fashi<strong>one</strong>d long skirts <strong>and</strong> shawls, while upon <strong>the</strong>ir heads<br />

were cast-<strong>of</strong>lF straw bonnets long out <strong>of</strong> date. How qua<strong>in</strong>t<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir faces looked <strong>in</strong> those old flar<strong>in</strong>g bonnets with ancient<br />

baize veils <strong>and</strong> decorations <strong>of</strong> wild flowers!<br />

Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r Benjam<strong>in</strong> Morris was not at home when we<br />

were <strong>the</strong>re that time; when at <strong>the</strong> Green Tree he occupied <strong>the</strong><br />

back room downstairs. The first even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> visit Julia<br />

built a fire <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great open fireplace <strong>and</strong> we young<br />

people ga<strong>the</strong>red about it. I see aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> play <strong>of</strong> light <strong>and</strong><br />

shadow on <strong>the</strong> old-time furniture <strong>of</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r's room, <strong>the</strong><br />

high-post, corded bedstead with its h<strong>and</strong>-woven, woolen cover-<br />

lid, fr<strong>in</strong>ged all around — <strong>in</strong> what solemn statel<strong>in</strong>ess it stood<br />

wait<strong>in</strong>g for its old occupant to come back! Everyth<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

us was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> long ago, but we were young <strong>and</strong> merry. John<br />

<strong>and</strong> Albert brought out apples to warm before <strong>the</strong> blaz<strong>in</strong>g fire<br />

<strong>and</strong> popped corn where corn pops best — over <strong>the</strong> coals <strong>of</strong> a<br />

wide, old-fashi<strong>one</strong>d fireplace. How <strong>the</strong> flames shot up <strong>the</strong><br />

old black back wall <strong>in</strong> use for so many w<strong>in</strong>ters! Aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

flickered over <strong>the</strong> ancient furnish<strong>in</strong>gs but left <strong>the</strong> remote corners<br />

<strong>in</strong> deep shadow. Little wonder that Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r Benjam<strong>in</strong><br />

Morris had visions <strong>of</strong> horses <strong>and</strong> riders pranc<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

his room! It is true, however, that he ceased to tell what he<br />

saw <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shadows when he gave up <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> tobacco, to<br />

which he had been immoderately addicted.<br />

Julia sat sew<strong>in</strong>g with her busy f<strong>in</strong>gers, seldom idle <strong>in</strong> this<br />

large family <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> days when all <strong>the</strong> sew<strong>in</strong>g was d<strong>one</strong> at home<br />

by h<strong>and</strong>. William read aloud to us, <strong>and</strong> when at his best he<br />

was most enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. His knowledge <strong>of</strong> authors <strong>and</strong> his<br />

apt quotations from <strong>the</strong>m, his store <strong>of</strong> amus<strong>in</strong>g anecdotes <strong>and</strong><br />

illustrations, not only enterta<strong>in</strong>ed but <strong>in</strong>structed us as well.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>rs were gay <strong>of</strong> heart <strong>and</strong> some were quick at repartee.
