OUR MOTHER, SOPHRONIA KEELER 51<br />

itself, though its chief note <strong>of</strong> association for me was <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

that <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r had walked over <strong>the</strong> old fortifications <strong>of</strong><br />

Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t as a little girl. Somehow, bemg among <strong>the</strong><br />

historic scenes where she spent her childhood made it seem<br />

more real to me that, long <strong>years</strong> ago, <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r had <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

played upon <strong>the</strong> battlefield <strong>of</strong> old Ticonderoga, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

young eyes had looked upon its overgrown trenches <strong>and</strong> broken<br />

ramparts, <strong>and</strong> that her feet had truly clambered over <strong>the</strong><br />

wonderful ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t. Her memory pictures were<br />

at last hung before me <strong>in</strong> reality.<br />

Our first thought was to cont<strong>in</strong>ue on to New York City,<br />

where Bro<strong>the</strong>r Joseph was to meet <strong>our</strong> nephew Paul, who was<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g to buy goods for his medical plant <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>ona, M<strong>in</strong>nesota.<br />

Later this plan was reconsidered, <strong>and</strong> a decision was reached<br />

that Sister Ida <strong>and</strong> I should return to Ohio, part<strong>in</strong>g company<br />

with <strong>our</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r at Albany. Before separat<strong>in</strong>g, however, we<br />

went toge<strong>the</strong>r to Saratoga Spr<strong>in</strong>gs. The day we reached <strong>the</strong>re<br />

it ra<strong>in</strong>ed. The crowd was great, <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong> better places<br />

seemed to be full. We could only secure some poorly kept<br />

rooms, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ferior accommodations shortened <strong>our</strong> stay.<br />

The atmosphere <strong>of</strong> this resort was depress<strong>in</strong>g to me; it seemed<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed <strong>the</strong> "broad way," <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old hymn came<br />

to my m<strong>in</strong>d as a most fitt<strong>in</strong>g description:<br />

Broad is <strong>the</strong> way that leads to death.<br />

And thous<strong>and</strong>s walk toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re;<br />

But Wisdom shows a narrow way.<br />

With here <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re a traveler.<br />

The people whom we met <strong>the</strong>re I had not been accustomed to<br />

meet o<strong>the</strong>rwhere — <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>ted ladies, <strong>the</strong> gamblers, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> drunken creatures. It was <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> races, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

crowd was great. The ever-rush<strong>in</strong>g stream <strong>of</strong> humanity<br />

<strong>the</strong>re presented to me a new phase <strong>of</strong> life, <strong>one</strong> not pleasant to<br />

contemplate, <strong>in</strong>deed terrible; <strong>and</strong> I was glad to have <strong>our</strong> stay<br />

shortened on that broad highway.<br />

We rema<strong>in</strong>ed over <strong>one</strong> night <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beautiful city <strong>of</strong> Albany.<br />

Here bro<strong>the</strong>r gave us a f<strong>in</strong>e d<strong>in</strong>ner at a first-class restaurant,<br />

<strong>and</strong> with a pleasant h<strong>our</strong> over this "square meal" we parted<br />

— he leav<strong>in</strong>g for New York City <strong>and</strong> sister <strong>and</strong> I for Cleve-
