apart, but k<strong>in</strong>dred spirits were also drawn toge<strong>the</strong>r. New<br />

Antioch <strong>in</strong> Cl<strong>in</strong>ton County was <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong> a large Christian<br />

church where an August meet<strong>in</strong>g was held, <strong>and</strong> people congregated<br />

<strong>the</strong>re by <strong>the</strong> <strong>hundred</strong>s. They came from adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

counties <strong>and</strong> stayed about two weeks, <strong>and</strong> those last weeks<br />

<strong>in</strong> August were a great religious <strong>and</strong> social festival for <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

country. Here <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ten preached, <strong>and</strong> it is a satisfac-<br />

tion to know that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> memory <strong>of</strong> a few his mellow voice<br />

r<strong>in</strong>gs on. Not long ago I had a letter from a friend <strong>of</strong> my<br />

youth who recalled how his smooth eloquence rolled under <strong>the</strong><br />

forest trees <strong>and</strong> among <strong>the</strong> rustl<strong>in</strong>g leaves <strong>the</strong>re at <strong>the</strong> August<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> New Antioch. She added that she had heard<br />

just this summer (191 2) a man <strong>in</strong> Ohio, speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> preachers,<br />

say that he had never heard a man who could fill a church<br />

with his voice like B. U. Watk<strong>in</strong>s — a voice so full <strong>of</strong> power <strong>and</strong><br />

tender love.<br />

At <strong>the</strong>se August meet<strong>in</strong>gs spoke Harrison J<strong>one</strong>s, a man<br />

who could move people to laughter <strong>and</strong> tears <strong>in</strong> a moment's<br />

space. Among o<strong>the</strong>r speakers was John Easter <strong>of</strong> Highl<strong>and</strong><br />

County. He <strong>and</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r were drawn toge<strong>the</strong>r by two strong<br />

cords; <strong>the</strong>y were both devoted members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian<br />

Church <strong>and</strong> both strong abolitionists as well. Between <strong>the</strong>m<br />

grew up a s<strong>in</strong>cere friendship. Bro<strong>the</strong>r Easter admired fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

for his pr<strong>of</strong>ound scholarship <strong>and</strong> manly defense <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />

which he regarded as fundamental <strong>and</strong> which were <strong>the</strong>n be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

strongly combated by those opposed. Fa<strong>the</strong>r saw <strong>in</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Easter a manly man who, although not scholarly, was still<br />

<strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e natural ability <strong>and</strong> good judgment. When he found<br />

that fa<strong>the</strong>r was at Hberty for a time, he proposed that <strong>our</strong><br />

parents move from Harrison over <strong>in</strong>to Highl<strong>and</strong> County.<br />

There fa<strong>the</strong>r was to preach for <strong>the</strong> church near John Easter's<br />

<strong>and</strong> tutor his sons.<br />

When this proposition was made I was at <strong>the</strong> Hunts' <strong>in</strong><br />

Warren County, <strong>and</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r wrote me <strong>of</strong> his good fortune, tell-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g me <strong>of</strong> Mr. Easter's great farm, seven <strong>hundred</strong> acres <strong>of</strong><br />

rich bottom l<strong>and</strong> on Rocky Fork, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> work he would like<br />

— teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> preach<strong>in</strong>g. I was twenty-<strong>one</strong> <strong>years</strong> <strong>of</strong> age,<br />

<strong>and</strong> I began to draw pictures <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g among rich l<strong>and</strong>-owners.
