housekeep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wagon. At once <strong>the</strong> man started <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

work <strong>of</strong> ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g material for <strong>the</strong> first house. He selected<br />

from <strong>the</strong> forest <strong>the</strong> trees suitable for <strong>the</strong> logs, felled <strong>the</strong>m, prepared<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to go <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> walls, split clapboards <strong>and</strong> puncheons,<br />

<strong>and</strong> brought st<strong>one</strong>s <strong>and</strong> clay from <strong>the</strong> rocky run near by —<br />

large, flat st<strong>one</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> hearth <strong>and</strong> smaller <strong>one</strong>s to build <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> fireplace. They made by <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>the</strong>ir nest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> for-<br />

est, from materials ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

In time <strong>the</strong> little home was ready: <strong>the</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> this first<br />

house were <strong>of</strong> round logs, with <strong>in</strong>terstices "ch<strong>in</strong>ked" <strong>and</strong><br />

daubed; <strong>the</strong> floors <strong>of</strong> split boards called "puncheons" were<br />

laid; eave poles, rib poles, clapboards (sh<strong>in</strong>gles), <strong>and</strong> weight<br />

poles with "knees" to hold <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> place completed <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong><br />

without <strong>one</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle nail, wooden p<strong>in</strong>s be<strong>in</strong>g used where fasten<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was required. The old-fashi<strong>one</strong>d "cat <strong>and</strong> clay" chimney<br />

was ready for its daily smoke. These chimneys were made <strong>of</strong><br />

sticks laid up someth<strong>in</strong>g like <strong>the</strong> cob houses <strong>of</strong> childhood <strong>and</strong><br />

thoroughly . plastered with clay with<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> without. They<br />

were, <strong>of</strong> c<strong>our</strong>se, built up on <strong>the</strong> outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house wall, <strong>and</strong><br />

were largest at <strong>the</strong> base, grow<strong>in</strong>g narrower as <strong>the</strong> top was<br />

approached.<br />

The fireplace was constructed <strong>of</strong> st<strong>one</strong>s from <strong>the</strong><br />

Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r had pounded out <strong>the</strong> crane <strong>and</strong> pothooks upon<br />

his anvil, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y were hung <strong>in</strong> place. "Old Star" had been<br />

hitched up to haul <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> six-foot backlog, which he snaked<br />

straight <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> room where gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r could roll it <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

great fireplace, to burn for several days. Now <strong>the</strong> appetiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

odor <strong>of</strong> wild meat fills <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong> — <strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>parents are at<br />

home <strong>in</strong> Ohio. We have not heard that any ceremonies<br />

attended <strong>the</strong> hang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crane, nei<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> house-warm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

celebrated <strong>in</strong> any way that has come down to us; but we<br />

know <strong>the</strong>y must have been happy to feel settled <strong>and</strong> at home.<br />

It is true that at first but quilts <strong>and</strong> blankets hung at <strong>the</strong> door<br />

— poor protection from wildcats, pan<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r forest<br />

creatures; but at least <strong>the</strong> f<strong>our</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> home were <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>and</strong><br />

love <strong>and</strong> hope <strong>and</strong> faith dwelt with<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Much rema<strong>in</strong>ed to be d<strong>one</strong>. As soon as he could <strong>the</strong><br />

pi<strong>one</strong>er fa<strong>the</strong>r cut <strong>the</strong> heavy timber about <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong>, rolled
