OVER THE MOUNTAINS FROM ESSEX COUNTY<br />

T would even now be thought quite a venture<br />

to start out with a young family to cross <strong>the</strong><br />

Alleghany Mounta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a wagon conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> <strong>one</strong>'s earthly possessions, but this<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> "<strong>the</strong> schoolground <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American<br />

Revolution" had heard good reports <strong>of</strong> those<br />

fertile l<strong>and</strong>s toward <strong>the</strong> westward, where game<br />

<strong>and</strong> wild fruit were plenty. Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r Keeler was a plodder,<br />

easy-go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> yet <strong>in</strong>dustrious; while Gr<strong>and</strong>mo<strong>the</strong>r Keeler<br />

was bus<strong>in</strong>ess-like, a mo<strong>the</strong>r "look<strong>in</strong>g well to <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>of</strong> her<br />

household." She was tall <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> large frame, with dark eyes<br />

<strong>and</strong> hair. I never saw her with underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g eyes, for <strong>the</strong><br />

last time she was <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> house was when I was born. Gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

was undersized, with very black hair <strong>and</strong> eyes. I can<br />

remember him — a quiet little old man afflicted with rheuma-<br />

tism, so he always carried his crutches.<br />

My mo<strong>the</strong>r was about seventeen when <strong>the</strong>y decided to<br />

venture westward. Already we <strong>in</strong>fer that she was a leader <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> family, <strong>and</strong> that her enterprise helped her parents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

decision. As <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> j<strong>our</strong>ney <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> Watk<strong>in</strong>s <strong>ancestors</strong><br />

from New Jersey, we are left <strong>in</strong> almost complete ignorance<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> long <strong>and</strong> rugged way <strong>our</strong> Keeler parents came <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

oxcart with <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>and</strong> five children. The way to <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir dreams must have seemed long, we th<strong>in</strong>k, especially<br />
