CHANGES IN THE OLD HOME 205<br />

Red Lion, with a f<strong>in</strong>e view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> straight road lead<strong>in</strong>g north<br />

to <strong>the</strong> old tavern which stood about a mile away. From that<br />

cozy corner <strong>the</strong>y could see <strong>the</strong> neighbors com<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> village. I well remember Uncle John's arrival home from<br />

a visit to Indiana, announc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fact that Aunt Abbie would<br />

soon occupy her own room; so every<strong>one</strong> was expectant, <strong>and</strong><br />

at table her com<strong>in</strong>g was spoken <strong>of</strong> as a happily anticipated<br />

event, so we prepared to receive her. When Uncle John <strong>and</strong><br />

Uncle Spencer went over to Frankl<strong>in</strong> to meet her we prepared<br />

a f<strong>in</strong>e d<strong>in</strong>ner, made a fire <strong>in</strong> her room, <strong>and</strong> were on <strong>the</strong> lookout<br />

for her arrival with <strong>the</strong> two old gentlemen.<br />

Soon she came <strong>in</strong>, all bundled up <strong>in</strong> hood <strong>and</strong> furs; a round,<br />

smooth face was hers, well illum<strong>in</strong>ated by a f<strong>in</strong>e large pair <strong>of</strong><br />

s<strong>of</strong>t brown eyes. Her figure was portly; she weighed two <strong>hundred</strong><br />

pounds. With <strong>the</strong> rest I greeted her warmly, whereupon<br />

she asked me if she "filled <strong>the</strong> bill." I told her that she did.<br />

She dressed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day; a brown "front "was combed<br />

smoothly over a high <strong>and</strong> broad forehead, <strong>and</strong> a black headdress<br />

<strong>of</strong> silk lace crowned her. She had an easy <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>Fh<strong>and</strong><br />

way <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>cere love <strong>and</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dness.<br />

Thus began a happy acqua<strong>in</strong>tance last<strong>in</strong>g over a long<br />

stretch <strong>of</strong> <strong>years</strong>. Uncle John was not a Christian by pr<strong>of</strong>es-<br />

sion; nei<strong>the</strong>r he nor Uncle Spencer could read <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Bibles<br />

<strong>the</strong> religion <strong>of</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>in</strong>s forgiven, nor could <strong>the</strong>y believe<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> "faith al<strong>one</strong>." Thus it came about that<br />

<strong>the</strong> two sisters-<strong>in</strong>-law, who were so devout, dear Aunt 'Rusha<br />

<strong>and</strong> Aunt Abbie, read <strong>the</strong>ir Bibles daily as <strong>the</strong>y sat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

large armchairs. I noticed that <strong>the</strong>y read <strong>in</strong> c<strong>our</strong>se <strong>and</strong><br />

turned down a leaf as fast as it was read, so I looked <strong>one</strong> day<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d that every leaf <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir well-worn Bibles had been turned<br />

down. At <strong>the</strong> Red Lion meet<strong>in</strong>g house <strong>the</strong>y were both great<br />

"powers" at <strong>the</strong> "an.xious seat," both <strong>in</strong> prayer <strong>and</strong> exhorta-<br />

tion. Aunt 'Rusha was a good s<strong>in</strong>ger, <strong>and</strong> when she was well<br />

enthused would throw <strong>of</strong>f her wraps <strong>and</strong> move down <strong>the</strong> aisle<br />

shout<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

"I'm go<strong>in</strong>g home to die no more, to die no more —<br />

clapp<strong>in</strong>g her h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terspers<strong>in</strong>g shouts. Dear, earnest
