CHANGES IN THE OLD HOME 193<br />

burn<strong>in</strong>g ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>y thought I was gett<strong>in</strong>g breakfast, but upon<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g out on <strong>the</strong> shed kitchen <strong>the</strong>y discovered <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

ro<strong>of</strong> blaz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> flames driv<strong>in</strong>g toward <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The season had been very dry, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re was no water <strong>in</strong><br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r well or cistern.<br />

Will sprang out <strong>of</strong> bed <strong>and</strong> awakened Ida, who hastened<br />

<strong>in</strong>to her red calico dress, gett<strong>in</strong>g it on wrong side before <strong>in</strong> her<br />

haste <strong>and</strong> fright. She ran down <strong>the</strong> road cry<strong>in</strong>g, "Fire!<br />

Fire! Fire!" If <strong>the</strong>re had been but three pails <strong>of</strong> water when<br />

Will discovered <strong>the</strong> fire, it could have been ext<strong>in</strong>guished<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> dear home saved; but as it was <strong>the</strong>y had to see it burn<br />

down like t<strong>in</strong>der. Will tried to tear <strong>the</strong> shed kitchen away<br />

from <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house, but it was too late <strong>and</strong> he<br />

could not. The good neighbors hastened to his help, <strong>and</strong> all<br />

<strong>the</strong> furniture was saved except<strong>in</strong>g what was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kitchen.<br />

Will's powerful voice had sent <strong>the</strong> alarm <strong>of</strong> fire from <strong>one</strong> end<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y came as rapidly as<br />

possible <strong>and</strong> ripped <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> shutters <strong>and</strong> dragged out <strong>the</strong> furni-<br />

ture; but it was too late to save <strong>the</strong> house.<br />

As we drove up to <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>our</strong> home once stood <strong>the</strong><br />

scene was <strong>one</strong> <strong>of</strong> ru<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> desolation. The chimney <strong>and</strong><br />

cellar walls were st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g, but <strong>the</strong> f<strong>our</strong> walls <strong>of</strong> home had<br />

vanished; <strong>our</strong> goods were piled under <strong>the</strong> dear old walnut tree.<br />

I still recall <strong>the</strong> calm dignity <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> brave mo<strong>the</strong>r as she at<br />

once went to work to collect <strong>the</strong> scattered goods <strong>and</strong> pack<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> carriage house near by, while <strong>our</strong> dear fa<strong>the</strong>r sat<br />

down at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> walnut tree <strong>and</strong> wept out his heartbroken<br />

grief. "The labors <strong>of</strong> a lifetime g<strong>one</strong> <strong>in</strong> an h<strong>our</strong>!"<br />

were <strong>the</strong> words I heard him repeat while we were all wonder<strong>in</strong>g<br />

what next. Fa<strong>the</strong>r's lifelong friend. Uncle Jimmie Mc-<br />

Cash, came forward <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fered us some rooms at his house.<br />

As we were now homeless, William <strong>and</strong> Julia thought <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Green Tree, <strong>and</strong> so <strong>the</strong> next day <strong>the</strong>y got <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> market<br />

wagon <strong>and</strong> took me with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong>f to Warren County to await<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r developments. I was twenty <strong>years</strong> <strong>of</strong> age <strong>the</strong>n <strong>and</strong><br />

felt my spirit strong for <strong>the</strong> battles <strong>of</strong> life. I was determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

to do someth<strong>in</strong>g. It was a lovely autumn day, <strong>and</strong> as<br />

we j<strong>our</strong>neyed along <strong>our</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ds were full <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> loss <strong>and</strong> we
