ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

read a little, so that <strong>the</strong> Bible would be open to her; but writ-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g was no necessity.<br />

Our gr<strong>and</strong>parents thought <strong>the</strong> "three R's" <strong>the</strong> climax<br />

<strong>of</strong> knowledge, <strong>and</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r education, such as a knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> foreign tongues, dead languages, <strong>and</strong> advanced ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />

<strong>the</strong> height <strong>of</strong> folly. Because <strong>of</strong> this attitude, which<br />

was quite <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood,<br />

<strong>our</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>parents refused <strong>the</strong>ir aid to <strong>the</strong> education<br />

<strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r so deeply desired. This opposition grieved his<br />

sensitive spirit; <strong>and</strong> yet he was never <strong>one</strong> to hold bitterness<br />

long <strong>in</strong> his heart, <strong>and</strong> he became <strong>the</strong> shield <strong>of</strong> his parents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

age. S<strong>in</strong>ce his efforts to obta<strong>in</strong> a classical education were a<br />

success, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> disc<strong>our</strong>agement <strong>and</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> aid did not frus-<br />

trate his aspirations, he could let all pass <strong>and</strong> consider <strong>the</strong><br />

difference <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> times upon which he came upon <strong>the</strong> scene.<br />

We must remember also that all with<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> without his<br />

home were not aga<strong>in</strong>st his fond wishes; <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> his long<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for opportunities to obta<strong>in</strong> a higher education, his elder<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r came forward <strong>and</strong> stood <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stead <strong>of</strong> a fa<strong>the</strong>r. He<br />

knew his younger <strong>and</strong> more afflicted bro<strong>the</strong>r desired knowledge<br />

above all th<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong> time came he was ready<br />

to help him. One day <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor told fa<strong>the</strong>r he would need<br />

a new book for his advanced work. The announcement came<br />

almost as a shock, for he knew not how he could obta<strong>in</strong> a new<br />

book. As his parents so disapproved <strong>of</strong> his literary career, it<br />

would be useless to ask <strong>the</strong>m for m<strong>one</strong>y for more books; <strong>the</strong>n<br />

it was that his bro<strong>the</strong>r stepped <strong>in</strong>, teU<strong>in</strong>g him that he was <strong>in</strong><br />

need <strong>of</strong> some extra help oq <strong>the</strong> farm that day <strong>and</strong> would hire<br />

him to perform <strong>the</strong> task. In this way he obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> m<strong>one</strong>y<br />

to buy <strong>the</strong> needed book. When he met <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor he displayed<br />

with pride his new purchase. "Well," asked <strong>the</strong> pro-<br />

fessor, "how did you come by that?" In reply <strong>our</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r held<br />

up his bruised <strong>and</strong> blistered h<strong>and</strong>s, while his countenance<br />

beamed with dehght. An earnest soul will soon be known;<br />

even <strong>in</strong> a backwoods country <strong>the</strong>re is always some <strong>one</strong> to speak<br />

his praise, so it was that he drew to himself friends who loved<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g. Though I have spoken <strong>in</strong> general terms concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighborhood <strong>in</strong> regard to education, I must
