3i8 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

for <strong>in</strong>nate goodness, he had no child <strong>the</strong> equal <strong>of</strong> Doane. I<br />

know she has been a patient wife <strong>and</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r as she was a<br />

faithful <strong>and</strong> devoted helper <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> her childhood.<br />

Sweet-voiced Agnes, so early widowed — her children, as<br />

those <strong>of</strong> Doane, must make up to her much <strong>of</strong> what her life<br />

has missed. The name <strong>of</strong> Agnes Wickfield tells aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> love<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir parents for some book-folk. Sympa<strong>the</strong>tic <strong>and</strong> thought-<br />

ful, Agnes as girl <strong>and</strong> woman is sweet to remember. I am glad<br />

that she, too, had her trip across <strong>the</strong> waters with o<strong>the</strong>r musi-<br />

cians that summer <strong>of</strong> 1902, for hers is a music-hungry soul.<br />

She was married to Andrew Crawford on November 18, 1891,<br />

<strong>and</strong> on an Easter Sunday, April 12, 1903, she was left a widow<br />

with her three little children, Donald, Rosamond, <strong>and</strong> Dick.<br />

The siege <strong>of</strong> diph<strong>the</strong>ria which took Nell <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> first-born <strong>of</strong><br />

Agnes <strong>and</strong> Andrew prostrated Agnes with severity, but her<br />

life was spared. We see that <strong>our</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r William's family<br />

have had <strong>the</strong>ir share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sadness <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

Joseph<strong>in</strong>e Joy was <strong>the</strong> last child. We know her still as<br />

"Bam," contracted from Rose's name for her — Bamb<strong>in</strong>o.<br />

Once I loved to hear her whistle like <strong>the</strong> birds <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> south<br />

orchard long ago, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>years</strong> have stolen from me <strong>the</strong><br />

sweetness <strong>of</strong> sound. Bam is a bus<strong>in</strong>esslike woman, <strong>and</strong> I have<br />

noted with <strong>in</strong>terest her development, as I have that <strong>of</strong> all my<br />

nieces, watch<strong>in</strong>g to see <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>of</strong> characteristics<br />

I knew <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir foreparents. To Joseph<strong>in</strong>e it was given, as<br />

to <strong>the</strong> youngest <strong>in</strong> <strong>our</strong> family, to care for her mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> her<br />

last earthly days. She <strong>and</strong> Gustavus A. Lehmann were<br />

married October 16, 1895, <strong>and</strong> have made a pair to be depended<br />

upon <strong>in</strong> an emergency, which I th<strong>in</strong>k a high compliment for<br />

any<strong>one</strong>.<br />

Often dur<strong>in</strong>g my later <strong>years</strong> I have sat <strong>in</strong> my quiet home<br />

<strong>and</strong> thought <strong>of</strong> dear <strong>one</strong>s far away on <strong>the</strong> waters or <strong>in</strong> distant<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>our</strong> own l<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> I am thankful that <strong>in</strong> all <strong>our</strong> j<strong>our</strong>ney<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

we have been kept from fatal accidents. The generation<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g me must write <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> people <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

seen — to me it has been given to write <strong>of</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs. We<br />

are glad to have <strong>our</strong> party <strong>of</strong> this summer back <strong>in</strong> safety, <strong>and</strong><br />

now we th<strong>in</strong>k many times <strong>of</strong> Grace <strong>and</strong> Ernest <strong>and</strong> dear little
