io8 ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

I <strong>of</strong>ten wonder where <strong>the</strong>y are all g<strong>one</strong>. In <strong>our</strong> childhood,<br />

after a heavy ra<strong>in</strong>, when <strong>the</strong> orchard trees were <strong>in</strong> fresh bloom<br />

<strong>the</strong> bird concert was <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> season. Where now are<br />

those s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g companies that used to come on swift w<strong>in</strong>g each<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>g.?<br />

We looked forward to <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> bird <strong>and</strong> blossom through<br />

all <strong>the</strong> tedious w<strong>in</strong>ter, though that season, too, had its diversions.<br />

The slopes <strong>and</strong> little hills about us, when covered with<br />

snow, made f<strong>in</strong>e coast<strong>in</strong>g places. While chopp<strong>in</strong>g, fa<strong>the</strong>r once<br />

found a crooked branch m <strong>the</strong> woods just suitable to make sled<br />

runners for us. When it was completed, what a wealth <strong>of</strong><br />

happy h<strong>our</strong>s that sled brought us! It was f<strong>in</strong>e for haul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

backlogs <strong>and</strong> stove wood, turn<strong>in</strong>g work <strong>in</strong>to play. How happy<br />

<strong>the</strong> boys were when <strong>the</strong>y had <strong>the</strong> rick <strong>of</strong> wood on <strong>the</strong> back<br />

porch, for after that, <strong>the</strong> coast<strong>in</strong>g! It was not always good<br />

coast<strong>in</strong>g, for those sou<strong>the</strong>rn Ohio w<strong>in</strong>ters were quite open;<br />

<strong>the</strong> snow <strong>of</strong>ten melted as it fell, <strong>and</strong> aga<strong>in</strong> it went <strong>of</strong>f with ra<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> flood <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> water would st<strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> surface some<br />

three or f<strong>our</strong> <strong>in</strong>ches deep. Rubber overshoes were <strong>in</strong> those<br />

days almost unknown, <strong>and</strong> wet feet were <strong>the</strong> rule when people<br />

had to go abroad. We wore heavy shoes <strong>and</strong> picked <strong>our</strong><br />

way, cross<strong>in</strong>g fences <strong>and</strong> bridg<strong>in</strong>g little swollen rills with<br />

chunks or st<strong>one</strong>s. Small wonder that we looked forward with<br />

eagerness to <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>gtime.<br />

Toward <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter we grew very weary <strong>of</strong> cold<br />

<strong>and</strong> snow, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> outdoor freedom became <strong>the</strong><br />

topic <strong>of</strong> many a conversation. On dark <strong>and</strong> stormy days,<br />

when driv<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong> ra<strong>in</strong> made sad music on <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>, we<br />

called on <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r for "Story Spr<strong>in</strong>g." To add more cheer<br />

we built a blaz<strong>in</strong>g fire upon <strong>the</strong> hearth, <strong>and</strong> all drew near to<br />

hear <strong>our</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r tell <strong>in</strong> her own <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g marwier <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

happy time when we could be out-<strong>of</strong>-doors beside <strong>the</strong> little<br />

brook watch<strong>in</strong>g for crayfish <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>nows, or <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> woods<br />

search<strong>in</strong>g for signs <strong>of</strong> Nature's awak<strong>in</strong>g, which has held its<br />

old charm for us through all <strong>the</strong> <strong>years</strong>, even to <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> life's<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter. This spr<strong>in</strong>g my own gr<strong>and</strong>child searched as eagerly<br />

as we <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rav<strong>in</strong>e across from her M<strong>in</strong>nesota home. As dear
