ANNALS OF OUR ANCESTORS<br />

sciences waxed tender, <strong>and</strong> <strong>one</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> old pair sat by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fireside smok<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir respective pipes, <strong>the</strong>y began to dis-<br />

cuss <strong>in</strong> just what way <strong>the</strong>y should make restitution. At that<br />

late day <strong>the</strong> question was: How can we restore <strong>the</strong> garnered<br />

measure to <strong>the</strong> scattered patrons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mill? Suddenly <strong>the</strong><br />

old wife hit upon a plan <strong>of</strong> restoration. They would <strong>in</strong>vest<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ill-gotten ga<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a saloon, a certa<strong>in</strong> magnet for all <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

scattered customers. The glass would tempt <strong>the</strong>m all to enter<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir saloon door, <strong>and</strong> once enticed, said glass should be so<br />

short that <strong>the</strong> bibulous could not fall <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>temperance;<br />

<strong>in</strong> that way perfect restitution could be made for <strong>the</strong><br />

extra toll those same customers had paid. Short measure <strong>of</strong><br />

whisky given would at<strong>one</strong> for overmeasure <strong>of</strong> wheat taken.<br />

A Cure for Delirium Tremens<br />

Fa<strong>the</strong>r was a Christian preacher, <strong>and</strong> Saturday even<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

were devoted to study. One dark, w<strong>in</strong>dy night as he sat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

front room with a blaz<strong>in</strong>g fire, <strong>the</strong> family all hav<strong>in</strong>g g<strong>one</strong><br />

al<strong>of</strong>t to <strong>the</strong>ir rooms, he heard a call from <strong>the</strong> front gate, to<br />

which he responded <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> his usual hospitable way <strong>in</strong>vited<br />

<strong>the</strong> stranger <strong>in</strong>. To <strong>our</strong> surprise <strong>the</strong> traveler carried a small<br />

c<strong>and</strong>le <strong>in</strong> his h<strong>and</strong>, which he had to protect from <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

He seemed much excited, <strong>and</strong> told fa<strong>the</strong>r that a horse kept<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g before him all <strong>the</strong> way down Brown's hill. Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

gave him a room <strong>and</strong> proceeded with his study <strong>and</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Directly he heard a call from <strong>the</strong> room, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>in</strong>quiry found<br />

his guest <strong>in</strong> great distress, tell<strong>in</strong>g fa<strong>the</strong>r that two calves were<br />

sow<strong>in</strong>g sulphur over his bed <strong>and</strong> besought him to smell <strong>the</strong><br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s <strong>and</strong> detect if <strong>the</strong>re were not sulphur <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

told him he could nei<strong>the</strong>r see nor smell anyth<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary. The man became quiet aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r resumed<br />

his work, but soon <strong>the</strong> call came aga<strong>in</strong> — this time <strong>the</strong> stranger<br />

was hav<strong>in</strong>g difficulty with two devils sitt<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> head-board<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>kl<strong>in</strong>g him with sulphur. At last fa<strong>the</strong>r thought <strong>of</strong> a<br />

familiar herb <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> family pharmacopoeia — lobelia! The<br />

dried herbs were taken from <strong>the</strong> closet, <strong>the</strong> teakettle placed on<br />

<strong>the</strong> crane over <strong>the</strong> fire, <strong>and</strong> soon <strong>the</strong> decoction was made <strong>and</strong><br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istered.
