12.2.3 Conservation Needs <strong>of</strong> the Species<br />

At the ESU level, SONCC coho salmon must demonstrate representation, redundancy,<br />

connectivity, and resiliency. Representation relates to the genetic and life history diversity <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ESU, which is needed to conserve its adaptive capacity. Redundancy addresses the need to have<br />

a sufficient number <strong>of</strong> populations so the ESU can withstand catastrophic events (NMFS 2010c).<br />

Connectivity refers to the dispersal capacity <strong>of</strong> populations to maintain long-term demographic<br />
