Session Overview:
As increasingly effective therapies are developed for rheumatoid
arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, it is more important
than ever to identify patients who achieve remission in
response to these therapies, and to develop tools to measure
and document this response. Recognizing the limitations of
the existing Pinal’s definition of rheumatoid arthritis remission
and the definition based on the Disease Activity Score,
representatives from ACR and EULAR have now developed
a new definition of remission. This session will present the
development of this definition and review the evidence that
supports it. In addition, work that has been done to develop a
definition of disease remission in juvenile idiopathic arthritis will
also be discussed.
Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:
• describe the need for a consistent definition of remission in
rheumatoid arthritis
• define rheumatoid arthritis remission using the new
definition, in clinical trials and clinical practice
• contrast the elements of remission in rheumatoid arthritis
with those in juvenile idiopathic arthritis
• explain the utility of defining remission in clinical practice
