Pregnancy<br />

Because of the uterine stimulant activity (See Pharmacology) the herbal<br />

substance and its herbal preparations should not be used during pregnancy.<br />

Nursing mothers<br />

The herbal substance and its herbal preparations should not be used by<br />

nursing mothers.<br />

Paediatric use<br />

The herb in its powdered form is not recommended for children due to<br />

the inorganic silica content. Toxicity of the herb was found to be similar<br />

to nicotine poisoning in children <strong>who</strong> chewed the stems (38).<br />

Dosage forms<br />

Cut herb for infusions, decoctions and other equivalent Galenical preparations.<br />

Posology<br />

(Unless otherwise indicated)<br />

For <strong>int</strong>ernal use. Average daily dose 6 g of herb as a decoction or infusion<br />

(1:5) given in divided doses three times daily (75). Fluid ethanol extract:<br />

1:1 (g/ml), half a teaspoon (2 ml) 2 times daily (76). Tincture: 1:5 (g/ml),<br />

10 ml three times daily.<br />

For external use. To prepare a decoction for use in making a cataplasm or<br />

compress: add 10 g of herb to 1 l of boiling water for direct application to<br />

the skin (23). As a bath additive: add 2 g of herb to 1 l of hot water and<br />

steep for 1 hour, then add it to water in the bath (51).<br />
