Contraindications<br />

In patients with biliary obstructions, existing or previous liver disease or<br />

hepatitis, concomitant use of hepatotoxic substances is contraindicated<br />

(80, 85).<br />

Warnings<br />

Use of the crude drug and preparations of Herba Chelidonii should be<br />

restricted to short-term use (1–4 weeks) and long-term use (for more than<br />

4 weeks) is not recommended. Due to the potential for liver toxicity, liver<br />

enzymes should be evaluated prior to and during use (81, 86, 87). <strong>Health</strong><br />

professionals should be encouraged to report any suspected adverse reactions<br />

thought to be associated with Herba Chelidonii.<br />

Precautions<br />

General<br />

Use only under professional supervision. In patients with gallstones, the<br />

product should not be used without medical advice (4). The plant is subject<br />

to legal restrictions in some countries (88, 89). The Drug and Medicinal<br />

Product Institute of Germany recommends a maximum daily dose of<br />

2.5 mg total alkaloids, which is lower than the recommended doses prescribed<br />

by other authorities (3, 5, 89).<br />
