Flos Helichrysi arenarii<br />

Definition<br />

Flos Helichrysi arenarii consists of the dried inflorescences of Helichrysum<br />

arenarium (L.) Moench (Asteraceae) collected during the budding<br />

phase (1, 2).<br />

Antennaria arenarium L., Gnaphalium arenarium L. (3, 4).<br />

Geographical distribution<br />

Indigenous to central, eastern, and southern Europe, the plant is both collected<br />

in the wild and cultivated commercially. The plant also grows in<br />

North America. In the Newly Independent States, it is found mainly in the<br />

European regions, but it is also grown in central Asia and west Siberia. The<br />

main suppliers are the former USSR, Poland and Turkey (5, 7, 14, 15).<br />

Description<br />

A perennial herb, 10–30(60) cm high. Rhizome: short, strong, obliquely<br />

descendent, from 1–4 to 5–7(15) mm in diameter. Stems: fertile and sterile,<br />

erect, unbranched, eglandulous, grey, adpressed-tomentose. Leaves:<br />

alternate, grey-tomentose like the stems; basal leaves petiolate, linearoblanceolate<br />

to spatulate, 7–60 mm long, 2–8 mm wide; stem leaves ses-<br />
